Overview

Poppy Unit is a 20 bedded mixed acute unit located in the heart of Wiltshire. We work with a range of service users who are presenting as acutely unwell and in crises. We are looking for professional and enthusiastic nurses to join our team of qualified nurses, HCA's, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapist, Exercise Specialists, Activities Coordinator and Doctors. This role is within an acute inpatient ward that operates on a 24/7 shift basis. Staff will qualify for unsocial enhancements in addition to their basic pay. Successful applicants will be required to undertake and complete a Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression course. This enables staff to begin building the skills to de‑escalate service users in peaks of distress whilst maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment for all.


Responsibilities

* Carry out clinical practice within designated clinical areas, ensuring high quality evidence-based nursing assessment, care planning, interventions and evaluations for patients.
* Undertake a comprehensive, person-centred nursing assessment and prepare care plans in consultation with service users to provide the best nursing care.
* Implement care and rehabilitation programmes.
* Evaluate the effectiveness of care provided in partnership with users.
* Demonstrate the ability to implement research-based practice.
* Following successful completion of preceptorship, supervise junior and unqualified staff.
* Administer medicines within relevant Trust and legislative guidance (e.g., NMC Standards for Medicines Management 2010 and the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971).
* Undertake risk assessment and develop risk management strategies for individual clients; provide ICPA/SAP to people who present with mental health problems.
* Demonstrate a working knowledge of the key elements of relevant mental health legislation.
* Ensure the ordering, storage, administration and disposal of medication complies with relevant trust and legislative guidance (e.g., NMC Standards for Medicines Management 2010, Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and MHA 1983).


Teaching, Education & Health Promotion

* Use your skills, knowledge and resources to provide mentoring opportunities for staff within designated areas and promote positive attitudes towards mental health.
* Provide regular advice and mentoring to staff.
* Support the provision of an appropriate learning environment for pre- and post-registered students, novice practitioners, and new team members as directed.


Continuing Professional Development

* Maintain and develop professional knowledge, skills and expertise to ensure practice remains evidence-based, current and responsive to changing patient and NHS service needs.
* Abide by the legal rules, statutory regulations and professional responsibilities relating to practice as outlined in the NMC Code: Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics for Nurses and Midwives.
* Take responsibility for post-registration education and continuing professional development as outlined in NMC standards.
* Receive clinical supervision in accordance with the trust Clinical Supervision Policy.
