JOB BAND: C
CONTRACT TYPE: 10 months Fixed-term Contract/Attachment, Full-time ( Until end of May 2026)
DEPARTMENT: BBC Nations, Radio Devon
LOCATION: Plymouth
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £27,300 - £30,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

BBC EXTEND This role is advertised as part of our BBC Extend programme for disabled people. To apply for this role you should identify as deaf, disabled or neurodivergent and must meet either the definition of disability in the Equality Act (2010), or the definition of disability in the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) if applying in Northern Ireland. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE Join our creative team at Radio Devon as a journalist responsible for setting up live broadcasts, unearthing original stories, and crafting high-impact social content. In this dynamic role, you'll capture the voices of Devon’s communities, ensuring that compelling local stories are heard far and wide. In local radio your work matters deeply to our audience and is at the heart of community engagement.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
Ability and experience crafting creative and engaging content that resonates with local communities.
Proven examples of extending stories’ reach via digital platforms and social media.
Live news reading and reporting
Editorial & Legal Acumen: Solid grasp of editorial and legal guidelines, underpinning responsible journalism.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
Research & Writing: Strong research skills coupled with a flair for writing tight, catchy cues and copy.
Attention to Detail: An inherent eye for detail that enhances quality and accuracy.
Professional Qualification/Experience: Either a recognised journalism qualification or at least two years of industry experience.
Working Under Pressure: Ability to perform effectively in high‐pressure, fast‐paced environments.

Local Insight: Deep familiarity with the BBC Radio Devon area and an understanding of the stories that matter to our audience and the wider community in Devon.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities •Use a range of video, audio and digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver outputs in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.•May be required to present the content on radio, TV or online. This might be live or recorded.•May include the production and presentation of programmes. This might be live or recorded.•Exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism.•To undertake pre- and post-production and studio work, live and pre-recorded. Use a range of video, audio and digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver programmes in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.•To liaise closely with other team members and with other departments in the BBC, to ensure that output material is shared, duplication is avoided, and best practice is upheld.•Take a lead within a team setting or on delivering a specific piece of journalism or project as appropriate.•To tailor different news treatments for different audiences ensuring that the output reflects the audiences we serve.•To prioritise and plan activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources available.•To produce engaging packages through a range of production skills.•Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.•At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the BBC health and safety policy
