Overview
Department of Microbiology, Virology and Infection Prevention Control Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Virology. We are seeking a HCPC-registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Virology to support the Virology diagnostic laboratory. The successful candidate will have NHS Virology/Molecular laboratory experience and may be required to participate in weekend working (Saturday shifts). The department provides a range of investigations to support the specialist paediatric population and also provides a service to other hospitals. The laboratory is ISO15189 accredited. Responsibilities
* To assist in the provision of all aspects of the clinical diagnostic service as part of the Directorate of Core Clinical Services and Medicine Tests and Therapies (MTT).
* To work within, on a rotational basis, with other biomedical scientists, in one or more sections of the Virology laboratory including serology, viral real-time PCR, pan-bacterial and 16S PCR, sequencing.
* To participate in weekend working.
* To participate in the research activities of the department.
* Any other duties, which may be required for the provision of the laboratory service subject to agreement between the manager and the post holder.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
* BSc (Hons) degree relevant to Biomedical Science
* Health and Care Professions Council registered as Biomedical Scientist
* IBMS Specialist Portfolio or Log book
* Knowledge of the day-to-day running of a diagnostic laboratory
* Experience providing training to staff
* Patient confidentiality and Data protection
* Practical experience in virology and with paediatric samples
* Ability to work without supervision after training
* Ability to carry out audits and support quality
* Good interpersonal skills and ability to supervise less experienced staff
* Able to work weekends
Desirable
* MIBMS or equivalent
* Experience in molecular techniques and equipment; ability to identify and troubleshoot problems
* Knowledge or experience with containment Level III laboratory
* Experience with instruments such as Liaison XL, QiaSymphony, Hamilton STAR, AltoStar, Quantstudios, ABI 7500
* Knowledge about autoclaves and waste disposal
