About the Role
The Nottingham Trent University (NTU) Project Team possess extensive expertise in the field of injury and illness reporting within elite football, developed through their ongoing partnership work with The Football Association since 2018.
The team currently oversee the collection, organisation and analysis of injury & illness surveillance data across multiple elite environments, including the England International Teams, The Premier League, The English Football League, and The Women’s Super League. This long-term involvement has not only provided the NTU team with advanced technical and methodological skills but has also fostered a deep understanding of the critical role surveillance plays in shaping player welfare strategies, guiding return-to-play protocols, and informing evidence-based policy within the professional game. Their contribution to this field is further demonstrated by a strong track record of research outputs, with peer-reviewed publications in world-leading sports medicine and science journals.
The ideal candidate for involvement in this project will therefore be someone who can demonstrate a clear willingness to develop advanced organisational skills to ensure optimal adherence to data collection processes. They should also exhibit a keen interest in the broad field of injury in elite sport, including the methodological and applied challenges of surveillance research.
The ability to work independently with precision, while also contributing effectively within a supervised, collaborative research environment, will be key. Beyond technical competencies, the candidate should be motivated by the dual aim of generating high-quality data that can inform academic publications and producing practical insights that directly support clubs, governing bodies, and ultimately, player health.
