Electrical & Instrumentation Operations Technician (Huntingdon or Cambridge)
Join National Gas, a national energy network, as an Electrical & Instrumentation Operations Technician in either Huntingdon or Cambridge. You will maintain, repair and optimise electrical, control and instrumentation systems across our gas transmission assets to keep our network safe, reliable and compliant.
Salary ranges from £42,813 to £50,368 per year, with up to 6 % bonus, overtime and standby allowance. You will work on site for 5 days a week and may travel to other sites as required. A company vehicle is available.
About the role
You will carry out maintenance, fault‑finding, repair and commissioning of electrical and instrumentation equipment. Your work will support day‑to‑day operations and planned shutdowns, and you will keep accurate records and safety documentation.
Responsibilities
* Perform planned preventative maintenance on electrical and instrumentation systems.
* Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair faults to minimise downtime.
* Calibrate, test and maintain instrumentation to ensure operational compliance.
* Assist with installation, commissioning and modification of E&I equipment.
* Ensure all work is completed safely, in line with company policies, industry regulations and safety procedures.
* Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation.
* Support operational teams during planned shutdowns and emergency repairs.
* Participate in a standby rota when fully trained (typically 1 week in every 4–5 weeks of work).
Key requirements & experience
* Time‑served apprenticeship or equivalent training scheme in an electrical or instrumentation discipline.
* BTEC National Certificate (or equivalent City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ Level 3) in an electrical or instrumentation discipline.
* Experience in FMCG, utilities, military or aviation (or similar) is desirable.
* Strong knowledge of ATEX regulations and hazardous area equipment.
* Strong knowledge of electrical and instrumentation systems, fault‑finding and calibration.
* Familiarity with safety management systems and permit‑to‑work procedures.
* Full UK car driving licence.
* Undated certificates in any of the following (desirable):
o Compex EX01‑04 Hazardous Equipment
o C&G 2391 Inspection & Testing
o C&G 2377 PAT Testing
o BS7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
o Compex EX01‑04 Hazardous Equipment
* Appreciation of systems and equipment from other engineering disciplines in the oil and gas (or similar process) industry – desirable.
* Knowledge of SCADA or control systems – desirable.
Security clearance
