Overview

The Cambridge Archaeological Unit which is part of the Department of Archaeology is recruiting Senior Field Archaeologists (Grade II) for a range of archaeological excavations, evaluations and surveys throughout East Anglia. Confirmed sites include prehistoric landscapes, Iron Age and Roman settlements and various urban sites. The CAU has several sites scheduled for Summer 2025 - Spring 2026 which include evaluations, and large-scale open area excavations. We are looking to recruit archaeologists on 12-month fixed term contracts.

Field Staff will assist in delivering fieldwork services to a professional standard and to strict deadlines. The CAU has 5 Senior Field Archaeologist (Grade II) posts available.


Responsibilities

* Carry out fieldwork related to excavations, evaluations, and surveys to professional standards and within specified deadlines.
* Work as part of a team under the direction of the site director, assisting in pre-site and on-site logistics as required.
* Supervise less experienced team members, trainees, students and volunteers where appropriate.
* Contribute to meeting client briefs, follow SIfA/CIfA best practice, health and safety legislation, and project specifications.
* Communicate and liaise professionally with CAU colleagues, external contacts and the public.
* Demonstrate precision and accuracy, with the ability to problem solve independently and to stratigraphically site excavation slots to maximise information.


Qualifications and Experience

* Essential: degree in Archaeology (a related subject may be considered if accompanied by significant on-site excavation experience, as determined by the University).
* Significant experience in British developer-funded archaeology and/or research, including extensive fieldwork.
* Demonstrable ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, external contacts and the public.
* Ability to work independently with high precision, and to follow archaeological briefs, best practices, and health and safety requirements.
* Proven ability to assume high levels of responsibility on site, including deputising for the site director.
* Experience in assisting with pre-site and on-site logistics, including supervising less experienced staff.

Desirable: driving licence (UK/EU), membership of CIfA, First Aid at Work, and health and safety qualifications (e.g., manual handling, Banksman, pipe & cable detection, Lantra Off-Road Vehicle, SSSTS).

Please include information regarding projects you have worked on and fieldwork skills such as field walking surveys, machine watching and urban excavation. Interests/skills in period specialisms, artefacts, environmental archaeology, illustration and survey are welcome and may be developed with training.
