Illegal Connections Technician — Southern Water
Location: Hampshire (travel will be required and a vehicle will be provided; a UK driving licence is essential)
Contract Type: Permanent | Hours: 37 hours per week | Salary: circa £35,000
Overview
Bathing water quality can be impacted by factors such as leaking or damaged sewers, storm overflows, agricultural runoff, illegal connections, animal waste, improper disposal of waste, and other marine activities. The Illegal Connections Technician will proactively investigate pollutions caused by waste reaching the local environment via the surface water sewer network. This work protects and enhances bathing waters. The role uses a range of techniques and technical knowledge to monitor the surface water network, trace issues to their source, liaise with those responsible for misconnections through to resolution, and report key milestones. You will join a team with extensive experience and a proven track record of finding and resolving issues for the local environment.
Responsibilities
* Proactively monitor the surface water sewer network and trace signs of pollution to the source.
* Communicate clearly and professionally with the person(s) responsible for the misconnection.
* Notify key internal stakeholders of identified illegal connections and update with key milestones.
* Following WATER UK guidelines, issue letters to the offending property.
* Engage with Local authority when a case needs to be escalated.
* Plan investigations effectively and prioritise workstreams based on severity and business commitments.
* Collect samples using a range of techniques and understand the results.
About you
* Knowledge of the surface sewer system/wastewater networks is desirable.
* Solution-driven, tenacious with a curious mindset.
* Strong customer service and communication skills.
* Ability to self-manage workload and time management; self-motivated.
* Basic IT/Microsoft Office skills.
* Flexible approach to working hours and willingness to travel within the Hampshire region.
* Water industry knowledge is an advantage but not essential.
* Passion for the environment and making a difference.
