Overview
Applications are invited from an enthusiastic, well-motivated HCPC registered biomedical scientist to work in the Department of Immunology and Immunogenetics within the grounds of Southmead Hospital. The laboratory is housed in a modern, purpose-built facility and the successful candidate will join a busy but friendly team.
The Immunology department at North Bristol NHS Trust provides a diagnostic service for a local population of approximately 500,000 and a referral service throughout the Southwest. The laboratory is split into four sections: Autoimmunity and Allergy, Immunochemistry, Immunophenotyping and Tissue Typing. The successful candidate will rotate between all of the sections.
Experience in a NHS pathology laboratory, preferably in Immunology and/or Immunogenetics, is desirable but not essential. We are looking for a team player with excellent computer, administrative, practical and communications skills to assist in the day-to-day work of the laboratory. Note: this is not a training post.

Main duties
* To assist in the supervision, training and teaching of trainee biomedical scientists, newly qualified staff, MLAs, and other healthcare professionals as required.
* To receive and process samples submitted to the Department in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols.
* To interpret and act upon results in accordance with laboratory policies.
* Communicate with patients, clinicians, laboratory staff from North Bristol Trust and other NHS organisations regarding samples required, appropriateness of tests and provision of results.
* To maintain a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and investigations carried out in each section.
* Contribute to the development of services provided to meet the requirements of users.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
* Provide laboratory support for pre-analytical sample preparation.
* Assist with performance of routine and specialist diagnostic tests on blood and other body fluids.
* Assist with booking and results entry on the laboratory computer database reporting system.
* Operate and maintain specialist laboratory equipment.
* Rotate through all sections within the Immunology laboratory.
* Maintain a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and investigations.
* Participate in risk management including the reporting of adverse incidents.
* Participate in quality assurance procedures in accordance with laboratory protocols.
