💡 The Role
We are looking for a Payroll Manager to take ownership of end-to-end payroll operations for approximately 600 staff. Reporting to the HR Director, this role ensures accurate and timely payroll processing, statutory compliance, pensions administration, and employee pay queries.
You will work closely with HR and Finance, maintain payroll records, contribute to year-end reporting, and support continuous improvement in payroll systems and processes.
This is a key position in a small, supportive team, offering autonomy, responsibility, and the chance to make a real impact on payroll and wider people and finance operations.
🛠️ Key Responsibilities

End-to-end payroll processing for 600 staff

Manage payroll variations, statutory deductions, and pension contributions

Prepare monthly payroll reports and support year-end processes
*
Respond to employee payroll queries with accuracy and confidentiality
*
Maintain and improve payroll systems and processes
*
Liaise with Finance, HR, auditors, and external bodies
*
Ensure compliance with HMRC, tax, NI, and regulatory requirements
👤 The Ideal Candidate
*
CIPP-qualified or equivalent payroll certification
*
Substantial experience managing complex, end-to-end payroll
*
Strong understanding of pay and grading structures
*
Confident in payroll software and HR/Finance systems
*
Advanced Excel skills and proficient in Microsoft Office
*
Able to work accurately under tight deadlines
*
Excellent attention to detail, confidentiality, and analytical skills
*
Experience in a school or educational environment advantageous
*
Basic project management experience, particularly in payroll software implementations, is a plus
