About the Role

An exciting opportunity is available for a committed and enthusiastic Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join the expanding Safeguards Team in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District. The team is already established in Penrith and is expanding to the Blue Mountains and Lithgow region.

The Psychiatrist will provide medical leadership to this senior team which prides itself on the provision of innovative collaborative and best‑practice time‑limited care to children and young people aged 0‑17 years who are experiencing acute mental distress. This role offers the opportunity to make a valuable impact to the community, including a significant Aboriginal population.

Work will be closely aligned with the Clinical Lead to build partnerships ensuring seamless provision of care. The role will include active participation in ongoing evaluation and development of the model of care.

The Safeguards Team is part of the well‑established interdisciplinary Child Youth and Family Mental Health stream, including the Child and Youth Mental Health Teams, Whole Family Team and Perinatal Infant Mental Health Team. The new Adolescent Mental Health Inpatient Unit is under construction and will open later in 2025.


Qualifications and Experience

* Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or eligibility for registration.
* Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) or equivalent as provided by the Health Insurance Act 1997.
* Certificate of Advanced Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
* Current NSW driver’s licence.
* Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and reflective practice.
* Expertise in providing high‑quality mental health services in a psychiatry setting, with a person‑centred, recovery‑oriented, family‑inclusive, trauma‑informed and need‑adapted approach.
* Ability to support and work collaboratively in interprofessional contexts that include lived‑experience professionals.
* Sound knowledge of psychiatry encompassing biological, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual domains.
* High level verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly, inclusively and respectfully.
* Experience in teaching and supervising medical staff, non‑medical colleagues and students, consistent with contemporary best practice.
* Evidence of high ethical and professional standards.
* Experience in supporting quality improvement and clinical governance activities.
* Familiarity with basic clinical and applied research activities relevant to the mental health service and the ability to draw on evidence and research guidelines.


Conditions of Appointment

Appointment conditions align with the Health Services Act 1997 and the Staff Specialists (State) Award.

Employees and contractors must abide by the NSW Health Code of Conduct.

Applicants must obtain a Working with Children Check (WWCC) issued by the Office of the Children's Guardian and be required to obtain the necessary vaccinations prior to commencing employment.


Additional Information

Successful applicants will also participate in a district‑wide CYF‑MH Consultant after‑hours roster and may, as negotiated with the Medical Director, undertake work in other parts of the mental health service.
