Ipieca Background

We are Ipieca, the global oil and gas industry association for advancing environmental and social performance. As a purpose-driven not-for-profit association, we work on a broad range of sustainability issues. We convene a significant portion of the oil and gas value chain and bring together the expertise of our members, NGOs, and stakeholders to provide leadership for the industry on advancing climate action, environmental responsibility, social performance, and mainstreaming sustainability. We were founded at the request of the United Nations Environment Programme in 1974, and through our non-lobby and collaborative approach, we remain the industry's principal channel of engagement with the UN.

In a world aspiring to a net-zero future, we act as a catalyst to bring subject matter experts together to advance member contributions to the pathways to a resilient, low-emissions future and to uphold our position as part of the international dialogue on the energy transition. We are also the industry's principal channel of communication to the United Nations. Our unique position within the industry enables our members to contribute effectively to the sustainable development agenda. By doing this, we help the oil and gas industry manage its environmental impact and address climate risks while working to meet the increasing demand for energy.

Key Areas for the sustainability and social performance Team

The Sustainability and Social Performance team looks after Ipieca's people and sustainability Groups.
Under People, the Social Responsibility Group (SRG) convenes members to advance industry social performance, respect for human rights and contribution to social and economic development. The SRG aims to identify and monitor emerging social responsibility and human rights policies and standards, and coordinate Ipieca's collective engagement around social performance. It develops operational guidance and tools to support the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The group also works to understand Ipieca's role in the energy transition through a social and human rights lens.
Under Sustainability, the team manages Supply Chain Working Group (SCWG) and the Reporting Working Group (RWG). The SCWG informs members and supports other Ipieca groups on the management of sustainability risks in the supply chain to improve contractor and supplier environmental and social performance. The RWG convenes the industry to enable companies to improve the quality and consistency of their sustainability reporting, provide inputs and respond to external initiatives and trends, and encourage uptake of reporting across the industry.
