Why Your Role Matters

The School of Built Environment seeks an Associate Lecturer, Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Industrial Design. The appointee will support the Industrial Design specialisation within the Bachelor of Design degree, which integrates studio-based learning with theoretical, technical and applied courses. The role involves interdisciplinary collaboration, building industry partnerships and advancing design-led practices that promote a sustainable and equitable future.


Responsibilities Summary

Level A – Associate Lecturer
• Deliver high-quality studio and non-studio teaching in Industrial Design, including course content, learning activities, assessment and constructive feedback.
• Contribute to curriculum review and renewal under the guidance of senior colleagues, developing independence in course design and delivery.
• Support student progression and success through consultation, supervision and mentoring.
• Supervise Honours students and contribute to HDR supervision under guidance.
• Begin establishing a research profile through participation in projects, co-authored outputs or design-led dissemination under guidance.
• Engage in professional development to build teaching, research and leadership capacity, including completion of the UNSW Foundations of University Learning and Teaching (FULT).
• Participate in relevant Communities of Practice and other teaching-related initiatives.

Level B – Lecturer (in addition to Level A responsibilities)
• Lead innovations in course delivery and take a proactive role in curriculum renewal.
• Establish an independent research profile with peer-reviewed scholarly outputs and emerging national recognition.
• Pursue external funding opportunities and contribute to research partnerships.
• Build active partnerships with industry, professional bodies and community organisations to strengthen connections between, research and practice.

Level C – Senior Lecturer (in addition to Levels A and B)
• Provide academic leadership in curriculum and program development, ensuring coherence and quality assurance across the Industrial Design discipline.
• Lead a sustained program of research with national or emerging international recognition.
• Secure external funding and produce high-impact scholarly outputs.
• Lead strategic engagement with industry, government and community partners to extend the societal and professional impact of Industrial Design.


Skills and Experience Summary

Level A – Associate Lecturer
• A Master’s degree in Industrial Design or a closely related discipline, with a PhD or significant professional experience considered advantageous.
• Evidence of contributions to teaching and curriculum development in Industrial Design at the tertiary level, including effective teaching practice in both studio and non-studio contexts.
• Emerging engagement in research or scholarly activity, with early contributions to publications, exhibitions or design-led outputs.
• Experience in supervising Honours research projects and capacity to contribute to HDR supervision.
• Track record of engagement with the Industrial Design profession and industry, with practical experience and evidence of staying current with developments in the field.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development in teaching and research.
• High-level interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team across education, research and service.

Level B – Lecturer (in addition to Level A)
• A PhD in Industrial Design or a closely related discipline, with equivalent professional experience and outstanding industry recognition considered in exceptional cases.
• Demonstrated effectiveness in course convening, coordination and curriculum innovation.
• An emerging independent research profile with peer-reviewed outputs and early activity in external funding or industry-linked projects.
• Evidence of building partnerships with industry, professional bodies or organisations.

Level C – Senior Lecturer (in addition to Levels A and B)
• Proven track record in curriculum leadership, course coordination and sustained innovation in teaching and learning, with evidence of impact at program or discipline level.
• Established research profile with high-quality scholarly outputs, success in securing external funding and national or emerging international recognition.
• Record of successful HDR supervision to timely completion.
• Evidence of sustained engagement with industry, professional bodies or community partners, with national or international recognition.
