Closing Date: 15 May 2026 The Role Accountable to the Director of Education-Clinical and Head of School, based in the School of Medicine (Faculty of Medical Sciences), to provide clinical and academic leadership to the MBBS programme whether delivered in Newcastle, across the Regional Medical School and in NUMed Malaysia. The postholder will be a member of the Board of Medical Studies, responsible for a key area of MBBS leadership, working under the direction of the Director of Education-Clinical and Head of School, as well as the Director of Education- Academic. Key Accountabilities Responsibility for a key portfolio of the MBBS portfolio, ensuring that the MBBS programme meets the required GMC national standards, as well as university requirements, Responsible for undertaking PDRs and appraisals of senior staff members within their team under the direction of the Director of Education-Clinical, To represent when required the MBBS programme at student functions, poster evenings, graduation ceremonies, Open Days, Visit Days and other functions, as well as carrying out educational activities such as teaching, interviewing etc, Liaison and close working relationships with Head of School, Director of Education-Clinical, Director of Education-Academic, MBBS Heads, other Curriculum Officers and Learning and Teaching Managers will be vital to ensure the successful management and administration of the programme, To be fully conversant with national initiatives in relation to MBBS curriculum planning, organisation and delivery through national networks and GMC initiatives; keeping up to date regarding best evidence medical education, Demonstrating scholarship, innovation and leadership alongside programme delivery, MBBS Heads will have responsibility for a specific area of the programme; responsibilities will be rotated after appropriate time intervals. Current clinical academic portfolios include: Year 3, 4 or 5 lead: curriculum content and organisation, line management of course directors/ professional leads/vertical strand leads, quality management, student input, assessment, staff development in relevant areas, Assessment: assessment strategy and quality management; line management of exam leads: OSCE, SBA, WriSkE, MOSLER; Chair of Assessment Groups (Board of Examiners, Assessment Strategy and Review Group, Assessment Leads Group); Level 2 Academic Appeals, staff development in relevant areas, Quality lead: Quality control of the programme with DPD: Course evaluation, AQMs, GMC, LEP visits and overall learning outcomes/ vertical strands; Clinical Placements (Primary and Secondary Care): allocation of students between LEPs, line management of LEP leads in primary or secondary care, quality management of LEPs, recruitment activities among LEPs; staff development in relevant areas, Professional Practice: professionalism strands, fitness to practice, fitness to study/ occupational health, appeals and complaints, extenuating circumstances, staff development in relevant areas, Staff Development: Staff development strategy and programme delivery, link to medical education programmes, Admissions and Clinical Development: Student recruitment (including international and widening participation) and selection strategy/ quality management of admissions process; managing transitions on to the programme and differential attainment, clinical input into EOMP curriculum development; student development: transitions, learning/ capability, accessibility, careers, leadership, peer mentoring/ teaching/ assessment; clinical development: communication, clinical skills, clinical reasoning, Early Clinical Experience, Citizenship; staff development in relevant areas, Additional areas include: Curriculum Development, Academic, Engagement, IPE, Portfolio development, Pastoral, EDI, Raising Concerns. The Person Knowledge, Skills and Experience In a substantive senior clinical role with a minimum of four clinical sessions, Evidence of successful leadership within medical education, Experience of interfacing with relevant external organisations, Experience of quality management processes in UK higher education, Experience of teaching and/or training and assessment in MBBS curricula Comprehensive knowledge of the Newcastle MBBS curriculum, Prior or current involvement at senior level in the Newcastle curriculum, Evidence of staff appraisal and management, including evidence of dealing with difficult situations and problem solving, Financial management, Recognition of teaching and or leadership though membership or fellowship with HEA, AoMEd, FMLM or equivalent bodies. Qualifications Be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register (any recognised speciality), GP Register or equivalent level of experience, and in a substantive senior clinical role, Postgraduate qualification in medical education at or working towards Masters Level.
