Responsibilities and duties of the Senior Design Engineer role
Reporting to the Hiring Manager you will:
Lead and manage a team of Graduate and Design Engineers to deliver high-quality electrical and solar PV system designs.
Review and approve design submissions, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and adherence to industry standards.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the design team.
Perform electrical system designs, including cable sizing, protection calculations, and designer risk assessments.
Conduct site assessments across commercial and industrial projects (up to 500kW) including ground-mounted, rooftop, and microgrid systems.
Prepare technical documentation and cost estimates for tender submissions.
Liaise with clients and stakeholders to ensure designs meet technical and project requirements.
Support continuous improvement initiatives, maintain accurate project records, and share knowledge across the team.
Work predominantly in the office 3 days per week (flexible to 1 day) and travel locally for project surveys, before, during, and after construction.
Professional qualifications
We are looking for someone with the following:
18th Edition Wiring Regulations (2382-22)
Electrical design & verification of electrical installations (QCF Level 4 / 2396)
Experience with commercial and industrial solar PV projects, including HV/LV systems.
Proficiency in CAD, PV CAD, PV Syst, PV Sol, Trimble, and Mode Exsoft.
Minimum 5 years' relevant design experience, ideally across multiple UK sites.Desirable:
Electrical installations (QCF Level 3 2357/2365)
Electrical testing and inspection (QCF Level 3 / 2391)
Any solar training courses or CPDs
Personal skills
