Shape the Future of Sustainable Building Design
We are looking for a technically proficient and forward‑thinking mechanical engineer to lead the design and delivery of building services across a diverse portfolio that includes energy, infrastructure, healthcare, education, commercial and transportation. Your role will be to shape the future of mechanical engineering at Tetra Tech, promote low‑carbon design, and mentor others in pursuit of technical excellence.
Location
Manchester and Birmingham
Purpose & Scope of the Role
Lead the design and delivery of HVAC systems, domestic water services and above‑ground drainage for new‑build and refurbishment projects. Produce specifications, condition survey reports and technical documentation, while engaging regularly with clients, architects and planners. The role blends technical leadership, stakeholder engagement and project management, with an emphasis on supporting low‑carbon transitions through decarbonisation and grid upgrade initiatives.
Mechanical Building Services Experience
Substantial experience in HVAC, domestic water services and drainage across multiple sectors, with a strong grasp of low‑carbon technologies and sustainable design principles. Familiarity with CIBSE guidance, Part L and BREEAM is essential, and you will apply this knowledge to deliver efficient, compliant, client‑focused solutions.
Technical Knowledge and Peer Engagement
Proficiency in design software such as AMTEC Dialux/Relux, AutoCAD, Navisworks and MS Excel is essential. Experience with Revit and IES is preferable. You will produce accurate models, calculations and simulations and articulate complex engineering concepts to interdisciplinary teams, challenging briefs and proposing innovative alternatives.
Design Experience and Delivery
Produce and review detailed mechanical designs, including spatial planning, thermal calculations and system coordination. Oversee drawing production, manage design quality, and ensure outputs meet client expectations. Mentor junior engineers, develop best practice and contribute to continuous improvement of design standards across the business.
Technical and Engineering Problem Solving
Apply engineering judgment to solve complex challenges, especially in refurbishment and remodelling where constraints are demanding. Identify practical, greener solutions and improve design efficiency through critical and creative thinking.
Project Management Responsibilities
Manage budgets, programme timelines and quality assurance for mechanical building services projects. Plan and prioritise workloads across multiple concurrent projects, coordinate resources, and ensure deliverables meet agreed standards and deadlines while maintaining financial control and client expectations.
Training, Qualifications & Experience
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering, or significant equivalent work experience supported by BTEC qualifications. Chartered Engineer status, or a pathway to chartership with IET or CIBSE, is highly desirable. Hands‑on experience with Hevacomp, MagiCAD, AutoCAD, Navisworks and MS Excel is essential; Revit and IES experience preferable.
