Job Summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a pharmacist with drive and enthusiasm to join our Clinical Pharmacy team as the Lead Specialist Pharmacist (8a) for Homecare and Day‑case specialities.
The post holder will work closely with the Principal Pharmacist for Business and Transformation and be embedded in multidisciplinary teams responsible for both Homecare and Day‑case specialities. The role provides comprehensive clinical pharmacy services and leads service development.
Responsibilities
* Provide strategic and operational leadership for the clinical pharmacy service within designated specialist areas.
* Oversee, deliver, and develop services in Homecare (including endocrinology, immunology, lipid clinic, Clinical Investigation Unit, dermatology, neurology) and Day‑case specialist services.
* Ensure patients across these specialties receive safe, efficient, and patient‑centred pharmaceutical care, underpinned by robust medicines management and strong clinical governance.
* Establish and maintain a framework to support safe, clinically effective and economically responsible use of medicines, ensuring compliance with organisational, regulatory and professional standards.
* Make autonomous decisions on service development and governance, interpreting broad organisational policies.
* Accountable to the Chief Pharmacist for Patient Group Directions (PGDs) and Patient Specific Directions (PSDs) including development, governance and review.
* Deputise for Pharmacy Business and Transformation Manager.
* Participate in consultant‑led ward rounds as required.
* Practice as an independent non‑medical prescriber where appropriate.
* Maintain strong multidisciplinary relationships and communication across the wider MDT.
* Identify opportunities for clinical development and service enhancement, presenting proposals to the DCSS Triumvirate management team.
* Implement local and national Homecare guidance in partnership with clinical teams.
* Act as the pharmacy department subject‑matter expert for Radiology and Endoscopy.
* Serve as governance lead for Radiology and Endoscopy, representing pharmacy at divisional governance meetings.
* Communicate complex pharmaceutical information to healthcare professionals, patients and carers.
* Lead the creation and delivery of the clinical pharmacy audit programme, translating outcomes into service improvements.
* Supervise, mentor and train pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other healthcare professionals working within specialist areas.
* Participate in late night, weekend and public holiday work.
Essential Qualifications
* Master’s degree in pharmacy or equivalent and 1 year pre‑registration training.
* Registered Pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (Great Britain).
* Post‑graduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent.
Essential Knowledge
* Professional knowledge from a vocational master's degree in pharmacy (4 years) or equivalent.
* Advanced level core therapeutic knowledge and clinical skills from a Post‑graduate clinical diploma (or equivalent).
* High level of clinical knowledge, reasoning and judgement for complex and ambiguous problems.
* Understanding of national and local healthcare policy/guidance and its implications.
* Specialist clinical knowledge relevant to the area of practice, developed through experience and CPD.
* Demonstrable experience as a specialist practitioner in hospital clinical pharmacy.
* Experience as an advanced level clinical pharmacist practitioner, achieving Excellence in the majority of competencies.
* Experience in delivering training and education at post‑graduate level.
* Experience in clinical audit or drug‑use review to improve practice.
* Keeping up to date with current developments in pharmacy and NHS changes.
Desirable Qualifications / Knowledge
* MSc in clinical pharmacy.
* Registered independent non‑medical prescriber.
* Experience in hospital pharmacy at management/directorate level.
* Experience of supervising or line‑managing others.
