A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a General Manager to join a fast-growing packaging company with over 20 years of experience in the packaging machinery and consumer industry. The company offers environmentally friendly packaging solutions across markets such as food service, supermarkets, industrial, and fresh produce.
Position Details
Sector: Packaging & Machinery
Location: Peterborough & Gainsborough
Package: Attractive salary (circa £100k) plus bonus/OTE (up to £16,000 – £20,000), 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, 4% pension, hybrid car (discussable), flexible salary, free parking, 20% bonus.
Role Overview
Reporting to the Managing Director, the General Manager will have full P&L responsibility and will focus on driving sales efforts. You will oversee a site with a turnover of approximately £15-30 million, employing 30-40 staff across sales, service, warehousing, purchasing, and logistics. The site is already profitable and efficient, and you will leverage your leadership skills to build on this success and meet commercial targets. Additionally, due to a recent acquisition, there will be responsibility for a second site.
Key Responsibilities
1. Develop and implement a business plan for the site/region in collaboration with the Managing Director.
2. Maintain full control of site P&L, make commercial decisions, and balance revenue and profit needs.
3. Work with the sales team to actively engage with key customers.
4. Maximize sales and profit, considering the implications of selling stock versus non-stock products.
5. Partner with the National Accounts team to identify new business opportunities within the site’s territory.
6. Manage health & safety issues and warehouse processes, applying lean manufacturing principles.
7. Provide incentives to staff and maintain KPIs.
8. Ensure excellent customer service at all times.
9. Adhere to the company’s policies.
Essential Requirements
1. Experience managing a similar-sized operation (single or multiple sites).
2. Full P&L responsibility for the operation.
3. Experience developing and nurturing employees.
4. Strong commercial acumen.
5. Experience managing a site with sales, purchasing, and logistics functions.
6. Proven sales management experience and customer relationship involvement.
While direct packaging sector experience is not essential, candidates from similar or related backgrounds are preferred.
