Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Orthopaedics and Surgery team at Barnsley Hospital. The successful candidate will support the running of our trauma and elective services, and surgical service including assessment of orthopaedic and surgical patients through to the Discharge to Assess pathway. The post holder will be expected to participate in, and support, the return of a 7‑day service. Successful applicants should demonstrate enthusiasm for working in an acute setting, with particular interest in orthopaedics and surgery and developing services for Barnsley patients. The post holder will provide specialist OT assessment and intervention within this speciality, as well as providing support to other specialities depending on service need. Deputising in the absence of the Occupational Therapist Team Lead, representing the orthopaedic therapy team and providing supervision is expected.
Main duties of the job
* Provide specialist advice to relatives, carers, and members of the MDT, promoting the OT role in patient care
* Advise patients, carers, relatives, and colleagues on the safe use of equipment, minor adaptations, treatment techniques, moving and positioning, in relation to individual patients
* Prescribe equipment; possess in‑depth knowledge of equipment available for patients and how it is accessed. Ensure that all issued equipment is used safely and correctly following protocols
* Accurately and effectively report and document any changes in patients’ condition or progress to other relevant MDT team members
* Produce specialist written reports, discharge summaries, risk assessments and other recommendations regarding individual needs as required by the service
* Represent the OT service and/or individual patients at MDT meetings and case conferences to ensure the delivery of a co‑ordinated multidisciplinary service, including discussion of patient care and progress
* Work as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team, liaising and working with other trust staff and external agencies as required
* Oversee and manage the caseloads of junior staff within a designated area
Qualifications
* Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy
* Current Health Professions Council registration
* COT Accredited APPLE Clinical Fieldwork Educator qualification, or working towards it
* Documented evidence of continuing professional development (CPD portfolio) and postgraduate study
* Member of the British Association of Occupational Therapists (desirable)
* Hold European Computer Driving Licence or other IT intermediate skills (desirable)
Experience
* Post qualification experience at Band 5 Junior grade (rotation/static) in a relevant field
* Broad range of clinical experience in a variety of OT settings, including NHS acute hospital setting
* Experience of clinical audit and research (desirable)
Knowledge and Awareness
* Sound knowledge and application of current best practice in Occupational Therapy
* Sound working knowledge of medical, orthopaedic and surgical conditions and the impact on occupational health and function
* Evidence of understanding and application of CPD requirements outlined by the HPC
* Understanding of current OT and where AHPs fit into the NHS Plan (desirable)
* Understanding of NHS direction (desirable)Working knowledge of the NHS KSF for performance appraisal (desirable)

Remuneration
Band 6 – Salary £39,959 to £48,117 a year pro/rata ( Permanent contract, Full‑time, Flexible working )
