Responsibilities
* Perform microbiological analyses on pharmaceutical products, materials, and production environments.
* Carry out microbiological tests on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished pharmaceutical products using isolators and safety cabinets.
* Conduct tests such as sterility, bioburden, growth promotion, preservative efficacy, and container integrity.
* Analyse environmental samples from production units, aseptic suites, and clean-room areas.
* Accurately record test details and enter results into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), including enumeration and identification of microorganisms.
* Approve environment test reports under the direction of the section heads, as required by the Quality Manual.
* Participate in the site environmental monitoring programme for facilities manufacturing and preparing medicines in the North West.
* Assist with routine validation and monitoring of laboratory processes and techniques, collaborating with senior staff to update systems and practices.
* Supervise junior staff members.
* Complete debtor request forms for preparation of invoices for external work.
* Handle routine technical enquiries from customers, escalating to senior staff as necessary.
Profile
We are looking for a highly enthusiastic and motivated individual, educated to degree level in Microbiology or a related subject, to join our busy Microbiology team. You will possess a broad knowledge of pharmaceutical microbiology quality control techniques, able to process large volumes of samples, record data clearly and accurately, and work independently. You will also be part of our off‑site environmental monitoring team performing testing of controlled clean‑room environments at various customer locations in Merseyside and Cheshire. A full UK driving licence is required.
Qualifications
* Minimum Qualification – Degree (BSc) in Microbiology or related pharmaceutical science, microbiological specialisation, and practical laboratory experience incorporating aseptic technique.
* Desirable – Experience working in a laboratory operating to GLP/UKAS standards.
* Familiarity with pharmacopoeial testing.
* Knowledge of a broad range of microbiological techniques.
* Knowledge of GLP principles, laboratory H&S and COSHH.
* Experience in environmental monitoring techniques.
* Excellent practical microbiology skills incorporating aseptic technique and good manual dexterity.
* Good record-keeping and keyboard skills.
* Ability to process large quantities of samples consistently.
* Flexible approach to change and ability to work without direct supervision on routine duties.
* Ability to identify improvements in work practice.
* Ability to receive and give instructions and advice.
