Job Title:
MPV Fitter (Multi‑Purpose Vehicle)
Location
Horsham & Effingham (depot-based with UK-wide site travel as required)
Salary
£44,000 – £55,000 (dependent on experience and qualifications)

Engineering Supervisor / Fleet Manager
Job Purpose
The MPV Fitter is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair of Multi‑Purpose Vehicles (MPVs) and associated on‑track plant to ensure safe, reliable and compliant operation within rail infrastructure environments.
**Key Responsibilities
Maintenance & Repair**
• Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on MPVs in line with maintenance schedules, standards and manufacturer specifications
• Diagnose and rectify mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical faults
• Undertake strip‑down, overhaul and rebuild of vehicle components including engines, transmissions, braking systems and attachments
• Complete safety‑critical inspections and defect rectification prior to vehicles entering service
Safety & Compliance
• Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with:
◦ Rail industry standards
◦ Company procedures
◦ Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) requirements
• Maintain compliance with LOLER, PUWER and other relevant legislation
• Accurately complete maintenance records, defect reports and job cards
Operational Support
• Provide technical support to operations teams and drivers
• Assist with commissioning, testing and fault finding during possessions or site work when required
• Support investigations into vehicle failures and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
Housekeeping & Teamwork
• Maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment
• Work effectively as part of a depot and site-based team
• Communicate clearly with supervisors, planners and engineers
**Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential**
• Minimum Level 3 qualification in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent (e.g. NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds)
• Time-served Mechanical Fitter or equivalent experience
• Proven experience maintaining heavy plant, rail vehicles or specialist vehicles
• Strong fault‑finding and diagnostic skills
• Good understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and maintenance manuals
• Full UK driving licence
Desirable
• Rail industry experience (MPVs, on‑track plant or rolling stock)
• PTS (Personal Track Safety)
• Experience working in possessions, nights and weekend shifts
• Electrical fault‑finding experience
• Forklift, MEWP or plant competency tickets
