Overview
Senior Biomedical Scientist - DCH Blood Transfusion Site Lead at Dorset County Hospital (DCHFT). This is an exciting opportunity for progression within Transfusion for a suitably qualified and experienced BMS looking for the next step in their career. The department is equipped with BioRad IH-500 analysers and the introduction of the BioRad Banjo Card reader is imminent. There is the opportunity for the successful candidate to lead on the implementation of new methods and modernisation of the Transfusion service. The post holder will manage and coordinate the day-to-day technical and operational activities of the Blood Transfusion laboratory on site, ensuring a timely, high-quality service in line with clinical needs and regulatory standards. They will act as the Site Lead for Blood Transfusion, deputising for the Blood Transfusion Laboratory Manager, and will serve as the primary point of contact for Blood Transfusion staff, including other senior Biomedical Scientists.
Responsibilities
* Manage and coordinate the day-to-day technical and operational activities of the Blood Transfusion Laboratory at DCH, ensuring a safe, timely, and high-quality service that meets patient needs.
* Act as Site Lead for Blood Transfusion, deputising for the Blood Transfusion Laboratory Manager; supervise and serve as the primary contact for Blood Transfusion staff, including other senior Biomedical Scientists.
* Deliver a safe, efficient, and compliant service, maintaining standards in accordance with MHRA, BSQR and UKAS (ISO 15189); support and supervise staff; lead quality and compliance activity; work with multidisciplinary colleagues and external agencies.
* Teach and develop Transfusion staff; ensure current working practices meet required high standards of quality; maintain up-to-date knowledge and competency in all aspects of the designated area.
* Report to and liaise with the ODP Blood Transfusion Manager to align with overall service goals.
* Participate in teaching, training and development of staff, and manage the development of the Blood Transfusion Team at DCH, maintaining high standards and acting as the main technical contact locally.
Qualifications
Essential
* BSC (Hons) in Biomedical Science or equivalent as assessed for IBMS registration
* HCPC Biomedical Scientist registration
* IBMS Specialist Diploma in Haematology with Hospital Transfusion Practice and/or BBTS Specialist Certificate in Transfusion Science Practice
* MSc in Transfusion Science or Biomedical Science specialising in Transfusion or equivalent
* Fellowship of the IBMS
Desirable
* IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Transfusion Science
* Relevant further qualifications or study (leadership, management, training, health and safety, quality)
* Willing to pursue further qualifications
* IOSH trained or equivalent
Experience
* Essential: Comprehensive experience and a minimum of 3 years in a senior or specialist BMS position within Transfusion in a UKAS-accredited laboratory
* Experience in and knowledge of a Hospital Transfusion laboratory
* Continued learning through academic/practical experience
* Problem-solving in a calm and efficient manner
* Experience in teaching, training and delegation
Desirable
* Experience of working out of hours
* Experience at a trauma centre with large transfusion workload or equivalent
* Management or supervisory experience; staff management, training and development, health and safety
Technical Skills & Competencies
* Ability to organise own workload and day-to-day staffing of the section
* Highly developed technical skills across laboratory procedures
* Proven training ability; good interpersonal and communication skills
* Ability to interpret diagnostic results and act appropriately
* Evaluate and appraise new methods and technologies
* Appropriate liaison skills; good command of English (spoken and written)
* Knowledge of laboratory information systems; familiarity with UKAS and MHRA standards
Knowledge
* Thorough, specialist understanding of Transfusion Medicine
* Clinical application of Transfusion in practice and public health
* Knowledge of standard laboratory procedures, quality control/assurance, and safety
* Ability to work across all department areas; MS Office proficiency
* Teaching, training and staff development knowledge
Other requirements
* Detailed knowledge of H&S requirements including COSHH
