Key Responsibilities for the Head of Engineering job based in Portsmouth: Provide leadership and management to the engineering team across Portsmouth and Norwich. Develop and deploy the technology and product strategy to meet business growth targets. Oversee engineering capability planning, team structure, and training to deliver long-term strategy. Manage development programmes from concept through to production introduction, ensuring delivery on time, to scope, and within budget. Ensure engineering processes, procedures, and standards (AS9100, BS9450, MIL Std) are effectively implemented. Lead risk management using tools such as FMEA and FTA. Own test engineering including hardware and software design and support. Collaborate with supply chain to identify and approve capable suppliers. Support quality investigations through engineering analysis and reporting. Embed a culture of continuous improvement within engineering processes. Required Experience and Skills: Proven track record of leading engineering teams through change and growth. Strong background in electronics hardware, software, or control system design. Experience in aerospace, defence, or similarly regulated industries. Programme management expertise with delivery of complex development projects. Familiarity with hybrid and/or mixed signal test design advantageous. Demonstrated ownership of engineering processes such as NPI and configuration management. Excellent communication and cross-functional leadership skills, confident presenting to customers and senior stakeholders. Strong organisational, planning, and problem-solving abilities. Degree in electrical, electronic, or systems engineering (postgraduate qualification such as MBA or Masters beneficial).
