Purpose of the Role
Transport Planner is responsible for planning, booking, checking and confirming shipments and rail movements within the dispatcher's area of control. The role ensures all movements are handled on time and in the most cost-effective manner, consistently exceeding customer expectations.
Key Responsibilities
* Plan Shipments and Reserve Capacity: Ensure shipments are planned well in advance, reserving sufficient space with the required suppliers, and arrange batch empty moves (e.g., barge or block trains) in coordination with the Fleet Management team.
* Provide Alternatives and Resolve Issues: Offer and implement viable alternatives when jobs cannot meet booked transit times, while liaising closely with internal customer services.
* Manage Instructions and Communication: Send booking instructions in a timely manner; update and share references or booking information with relevant operations departments and intermodal suppliers.
* Monitor Critical Transits: Check that urgent units or "AC" transits arrive on terminal safely; flag and coordinate any units not arriving on time with the relevant operations team.
* Maintain Accurate Records: Update laden shipment batches and ensure SWIFT entries reflect the correct status; document reasons for non-shipments and re-plan as necessary.
* Handle Customs and Compliance: Communicate any customs-related events promptly and keep performance metrics within established parameters.
* Champion Ethical Practice: Take reasonable measures to support ethical working practices and improve the environmental impact of operational activities.
