Salary: £50,000 - £55,000
Hours: 37.5 per week (Monday - Friday)
About the role:
We're seeking a creative and hands-on Advanced Development Engineer with a strong background in electro-mechanical systems to lead the design and development of innovative technologies for next-generation aquaculture solutions. This role involves working at the intersection of mechanical design, electronics integration, and systems engineering.
Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will be responsible for managing early-stage development—from interpreting requirements and generating system concepts to delivering near-production prototypes for field testing. You will operate independently in a fast-paced, innovation-driven environment, where your ability to think holistically and build practically will influence the future of sustainable food production.
Key responsibilities include:
* Leading the end-to-end development of innovative electro-mechanical technologies, focusing on concept development, design, and high-quality functional prototyping.
* Operating independently and proactively, while aligning with strategic goals and engineering leadership.
* Building and testing physical prototypes to evaluate performance, validate ideas, and guide design iterations.
* Applying design principles and prototype manufacturing techniques, including fabrication, plastic molding, machining (metal and plastic), and rapid prototyping.
* Producing CAD models, technical drawings, and documentation using SolidWorks, where required.
* Conducting design analyses to ensure performance, cost-efficiency, and safety compliance.
* Collaborating with software, mechanical, and electrical teams to optimize system performance.
* Contributing technical insights to proposals and product planning.
* Mentoring junior engineers and sharing knowledge to foster continuous improvement and innovation.
Required skills and experience:
* A degree (or equivalent experience) in Mechatronics, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
* 3-5 years of experience developing electro-mechanical products from concept to prototype.
* Proven ability to independently manage product development cycles, including prototyping and iteration.
* Practical experience with mechanical design for systems incorporating electronics, sensors, actuators, or control modules.
* Strong prototyping and troubleshooting skills, with experience building and refining integrated systems.
* Knowledge of manufacturing methods such as sheet metal fabrication, plastic molding, CNC machining, cabling/harnessing, and rapid prototyping.
* Experience with design for assembly, environmental sealing, EMI considerations, and electrical-mechanical interfaces.
* Excellent communication and documentation skills to effectively convey ideas across interdisciplinary teams.
