About the role
Background and details:
We are looking for a Workshop Chargehand, based at our Chester-Le-Street Depot. You will play a key role in coordinating workshop activity to ensure machines are prepared, inspected, and delivered to the highest standard. Working closely with the Lead Field Service Technician and Production Scheduler, you will act as the link between planning and execution, ensuring all Pre-Delivery Inspections (PDI’s) are completed accurately, efficiently, and on time.
You will take ownership of preparing new machines for customer delivery, ensuring all work is completed correctly, safely, and within agreed timescales.
Duties and responsibilities:
Workshop & Technical Duties
Assemble machines delivered in kit form to a high standard
Carry out full Pre-Delivery Inspections in line with PDI request forms
Customise new machines to manufacturer specifications
Spray paint machines and/or components to manufacturer standards
Diagnose, troubleshoot, and fault-find defects
Carry out repairs as required during inspection or build
Support general workshop activities within your skillset as directed by management
Administration & Compliance
Complete all paperwork accurately and within required timescales
Ensure documentation is filed correctly and maintained
Actively participate in training and development opportunities
Experience and Qualifications:
Experience in mechanical assembly, machine builds, and PDI or similar inspections
Working knowledge of auto-electrics and fault finding
Experience with welding and oxy-acetylene equipment
Competent use of workshop machinery (lathes, angle grinders, pillar drills)
Understanding of manual handling and workshop Health & Safety
Competent IT skills for recording work and documentation
Ability to follow technical instructions and specifications
Strong problem-solving and communication skills
Ability to organise workload and meet deadlines under pressure
Reliable, proactive, and flexible team player
Positive, professional, and customer-focused attitude
Good timekeeping and attention to detail
Manual Handling Trained – Desirable
Counterbalance Forklift truck licence – Desirable
SPA or CSCS training – Desirable
