Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children is a renowned tertiary centre which provides world-class care for infants, children and young people with rare, complex and difficult-to-treat conditions as well as acute, life‑threatening illness. There are three separate intensive care units at GOSH which together make it the busiest critical care unit in the UK. The units consist of the NICU, the paediatric intensive care unit and the cardiac intensive care unit.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a dynamic, forward‑thinking personality with a passion to help drive both changes in neonatal care and new ways of working. Proven success at quality improvement is essential.
The post‑holder will join a team consisting of 9 full and part time NHS consultant neonatologists at GOSH working on a 1 in 7 rota. The post‑holder will have regular attending on the NICU as well as participating in the neonatal outreach service which is provided on other wards within the hospital. There is a regular on‑call commitment. The successful candidate will also participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and will share in the supervision and training of extended nursing and advanced nurse practitioners.
Main duties of the job
Intensive Care provision at this Trust is a consultant led service. The attending neonatologist will have responsibilities for clinical duties on the Specialised NICU as well as communicating with parents, and referring teams, bed‑side teaching, mentoring of trainees and supervision of practical procedures.
When not attending on the Specialised NICU, there will be further clinical commitments on the wards elsewhere in the hospital as part of the neonatal outreach team. This will consist of reviewing neonatal patients with a variety of medical and surgical morbidities on a daily basis during the week and providing clinical advice to the neonatal specialist nurse.
The attached job plan provides an example of the proposed work schedule of the post. This is indicative of the duties that the post would require and should not be seen as a rigid timetable. It is recognised that there will be some changes in this job plan after local negotiation with the Specialty Lead.
A total on average of 8 PAs per week will be direct clinical care, with 2 SPA. Detailed calculations shown in job summary.

* GMC specialist registration with a Licence to Practice (obtained by designated start date)
* MBBS or Equivalent
* MRCP, MRCPCH or equivalent
* CCT/CCST in Neonatology (or within 6 months at time of interview) or equivalent training and experience (eligible for CESR)
* Level 3 training in child protection
* Completion of training in Neonatal Medicine (minimum of two years) in a unit approved for training by the RCPCH national grid training programme with evidence that this training has been signed off by the Neonatal CSAC
* An existing practising Consultant in Neonatal Medicine in an equivalent unit with evidence of equivalent training as per the UK guidance
* Higher Degree
* MD or PhD
* Formal teaching qualification
* Valid APLS and NLS
* Valid BLS Training
Experience/Knowledge
* Extensive experience in Neonatal Intensive Care
* Knowledge of Neonatal Clinical Governance
* Experience in audit
* Experience of teaching students and multi‑disciplinary team
* Experience of leading in Clinical Audit processes
* Awareness of the importance of Clinical Governance through experience of participating in quality or safety improvement projects.
* Published research in peer reviewed journals in relevant area
* Experience of recruiting patients to clinical research trials
* Experience in related sub‑specialty highly advantageous.
* Experience of working in shared care clinics and clinical networks
* Experience of clinical leadership or management
Skills/Abilities
* High level written and oral communication skills
* Ability to organise and prioritise own workload
* Ability to work under pressure in a multi‑disciplinary environment
