Introduction

Global Journalism is a key team within BBC World Service Languages. It provides high quality journalism and production, making text, video and social content that drives reach and engages audiences worldwide. Our core mission is to offer content to language services that enables them to cover and explain the world to their audiences, focusing on content that will grow those audiences.

The Short video team sits within our department and provides must-watch quick turnaround social and on-site video to World Service language services and BBC News. This could be viral video, a breaking news moment, a social cut-down of an investigation, or just beautiful footage that unveils the world around us. The team has grown audiences through a daily offer of videos which grab attention - turned around fast.

We are looking for an Assistant editor who has strong editorial judgment, a varied background in digital video, and a keen eye for what makes a video overperform on platform and off. You will have experience of motivating junior staff with a clear vision, of signing off content for air, and of navigating copyright, legal and editorial policy issues.

You will naturally stay on top of social media video trends, has a sharp eye for spotting viral stories, and bring solid supervisory skills to guide producers. This role requires understanding of the BBC's language services, the ability to quickly sub or write sharp copy, some experience in FCP or other video editing software, and the confidence to sign off on content quickly. Candidates should have some experience using social media listening and monitoring tools to identify emerging trends and inform video commissioning, ensuring our content remains timely, relevant, and highly engaging.

Main responsibilities
* Lead the short form video team's editorial agenda with support from the wider team.
* Organise staffing and delegate work, aiming to develop our staff to be the best they can be.
* Evaluate pitches and supervise production.
* Use your strong subbing and editing skills to help producers write ever-better captions and headlines.
* Drive collaboration with other departments from across the BBC to bring the best short video to the language services - and help the best of the WSL short video to be shared with the wider BBC to avoid duplication
* Research and pitch fresh, on-trend and viral ideas to the team leader which meet the expectations of our WSL audience and adhere to the BBC editorial guidelines.
* Be aware of social video trends and proactively stay across the news agenda.
* Use social media listening and monitoring tools to identify emerging trends and help inform video commissioning.
* Use monitoring tools to stay across WS language services' websites, IG, TikTok, YouTube and FB accounts to spot overperforming stories that can be shared with the wider audience.
* Proactively stay up to date with style changes, verification processes, copyright, legal and editorial issues.
* Guide journalists, editors and wider colleagues through processes that ensure our journalism meets our high standards for accuracy, verification, impartiality, editorial policy and legal stance.
* Meet tight deadlines and think ahead to the needs of audiences in 24 or 48 hours time.
* Be able to evaluate footage and sources, being mindful of our reputation and commitment to impartiality.
Are you the right candidate?

You will be self-driven to succeed with lots of enthusiasm and familiar with closely following short video trends and always developing new ways to reach our global audiences across the BBC's WS language services. In addition:

* Have a high standard of editorial judgment, scripting ability and production skills based on substantial digital video journalism experience with a major media outlet.
* Be on top of social media video trends, have a sharp eye for spotting viral stories that will resonate well with WSL audiences.
* Be well-versed at subbing video edits and giving feedback to producers.
* Have some experience in using social listening and monitoring tools for discovering overperforming video content.
* You'll know how to maximise opportunities offered by existing and emerging technologies to their fullest extent and feel comfortable managing resources, staff, technical facilities and budgets.
* Be able to flex and adapt to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities.
* Able to prioritise activities taking into account relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources.
* You'll be a journalist at heart, with demonstrable commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understand how individual differences can benefit us.
