Teaching careers in HMC independent schools

The successful applicant will mainly be supporting children aged 8-13 years old and teachers.


Role Description

The successful applicant will be required to undergo statutory pre-employment checks, including a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Responsible to: Head of St Peter’s 8-13

Hours of work: Friday 08.15-16.15 (there may be additional opportunities to cover other days)


Overview

The successful applicant will mainly be supporting children aged 8-13 years old and teachers. This will include running literacy or maths booster groups. They will be expected to work collaboratively and enthusiastically and be a highly effective practitioner interested in all aspects of teaching and learning.


Key responsibilities

1. To work with children (as specified by the class teachers) individually or in small groups, including those with additional needs. This includes ensuring access to learning activities within the classroom or other teaching areas in line with teaching programmes and adjusting activities according to children’s responses.
2. To develop positive and supportive relationships with the children and be aware of their differing needs.
3. To assist with the development and implementation of the children’s education. This includes assisting in the preparation of target sheets, behaviour plans and personal care programmes.
4. To use clearly structured teaching and learning activities, to interest and motivate pupils and advance their learning.
5. To prepare, organise, maintain and use equipment and resources as required to meet the lesson plans or other relevant learning activities. This includes helping to set up the classroom for the daily session and to help tidy away at the end of a session.
6. To assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson time, including playtime, lunchtime and after-school duties and co-curricular clubs.
7. To accompany teaching staff and children on visits, trips and other out of school activities as required. This will include taking responsibility for a group under the direction of the teacher.
8. At the discretion of the class teacher to plan, prepare and deliver small group activities which contribute to the progress of all children in the class. In addition, you will assess and monitor progress in these activities and then liaise with the class teacher.
9. To support the teacher in the preparation of resources for teaching, such as photocopying and other organisational and clerical duties.
10. To attend out of working hour activities as required e.g. training, staff meetings, preparation days in the holidays.
11. To have high expectations of all pupils and to be committed to raising their educational standards.
12. To assist with displays in the classroom and around school as directed by teachers.
13. To liaise sensitively and effectively with parents, recognising their roles in pupils’ learning.
14. To improve own practice, through observation, self-evaluation and discussion with colleagues and the Head.
