At Common Thread, we believe every young person should be able to access an engaging and meaningful education, that meets them where they are on their educational and healing journeys.
Common Thread provide education and residential care for young people aged 8 – 18 who have had challenging life experiences. Our two schools, in Lockerbie and Kilmarnock, provide a trauma-informed approach to supporting young people to develop their skills and interests and achieve their goals.
We have an exciting opportunity for a passionate, creative and empathetic teacher to join our fantastic team in Lockerbie. With a maximum of 15 pupils across both schools, the role offers a unique opportunity to support pupils in a low adult-to-learner ratio environment. Instead of planning for a large class, here you have genuine flexibility to tailor the curriculum to each leaner’s interests.
Each school is led by a Lead Educator with teaching and management responsibility and two full-time teachers. You will be supporting learners to achieve in the key areas of Maths, English, Health & Wellbeing whilst broadening their understanding of the world through Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL) and enabling them to experience success in a range of qualifications from National 3, 4, 5 exams to SVQs or HNCs depending on their interests.
So what are we looking for?
You must be a fully qualified teacher registered with the GTCS who has a passion for supporting young people with a range of additional support needs. You must have a good understanding of trauma-informed approaches and be willing to continue to develop your professional knowledge. You will need to be resourceful and adaptive in planning your learning experiences in order to inspire and engage our young people. Enthusiasm, patience, resilience and creativity are key qualities combined with the ability to demonstrate personal leadership. At times, you may be required to travel to the young person’s home to support their learning.
In exchange, we offer the chance to make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable young people. This is a full-time permanent position with salary in the range of £40,305 to £45,063 dependent on experience and qualifications. Teaching days for this role are aligned to Dumfries & Galloway Council’s School Term Dates.
