Product Support Engineer – LR8 (Glasgow)

Product Support Engineers are required to work with a degree of autonomy, reacting to problems as they arise. You may be required to liaise with other dockyard support engineers. You will assist in the identification and rectification of technical problems and issues, with support from the Senior Product Support Engineer and the Glasgow Engineering team as appropriate, fulfilling the aim of minimising any platform impact. This role will be Govan based, assisting on a variety of naval programme activities. A key aspect of this role is the requirement to visit the waterfront at short notice; these visits may be local (Faslane) and on occasion, as part of an international delegation. This post requires a well‑rounded Support Engineer with an awareness and working knowledge of relevant disciplines (electronics, software, mechanical, optical & manufacture).
The selected candidate will be expected to absorb a significant amount of information, provided via a combination of bespoke and on‑the‑job training, over an extended period of time, to increase expertise in the detailed operation of this complex system. The candidate will therefore need to be highly motivated and committed to this long‑term role.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks
* The Glasgow site tasks will be predominantly supporting the Industry and Engineering teams in a diverse range of activities; product development and manufacture, installation and test, IVVQ, product rollout, internal/external training etc.
* Respond to problem reports and provide engineered solutions for a range of submarine‑borne visual equipment.
* Attend Material Review Boards, to assess problem items and devise a suitable response for rectification.
* Assist in ensuring a timely and appropriate response to customer enquiries.
* Strive to reduce the number and duration of open OPDEFs for visual equipment.
* Assist in maintenance of platform Build Standard Records.
* Advise on any areas of handbooks/documentation/training that are deemed non‑optimal or deficient for investigation or action.
* Compile risk assessments for planned work.
* Applicants must be flexible and able to react to short‑notice peripatetic activities.
* Assist ships staff to investigate, report and resolve defects, keeping stakeholders informed.
* Respond to requests of many different natures within the naval business.
* Produce concise and accurate technical reports.
Skills and Experience
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Experience investigating issues in complex systems.
* Ability to work under pressure, as part of the larger support and engineering teams.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
* Experience in the use of standard test equipment (oscilloscopes, pressure gauges, etc.).
* Ability to support activities.
* Willingness to be flexible around working hours to respond to issues in a timely manner.
* Need to hold or be able to achieve SC Clearance.
* Full UK driving licence.
