Role Overview
As a Technical Author you will be working within the Through Life Support Engineering (TSE) team and undertake Technical Publications / Authoring activities to customers' requirements, within your own competence, without day‑to‑day guidance or supervision, in a professional manner. In accordance with relevant specifications, standards and Thales (Chorus II) and documentation processes.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks
* Make Technical Publications/Authoring decisions within your own sphere of responsibility and delegated authority.
* Fulfil the operating, maintenance and support requirements agreed with the customer, ensuring the information is clearly and unambiguously presented.
* Maintain close liaison with all aspects of engineering through interaction with engineering personnel and interrogation of contributory engineering databases, involving research and origination of new and amended textual data.
* Compile data to meet a variety of national/international/civil/military specifications and produce physical/electronic deliverables.
* Provide help and direction to less experienced team members.
* Manage your own elements of Technical Publications / Authoring work package.
* Take responsibility for contributing to team planning, risk management, quality and HSE.
* Set targets for and manage your own development with line manager, sharing good practice and knowledge to continuously improve your own practices.
* Manage work packages.
* Supervise and coach less experienced members of the team and apprentices.
Skills and Experience
* Technical Authoring
* Strong proficiency in standard Microsoft Office packages / authoring tools
* Excellent written and spoken English
* Engineering knowledge/experience
* Good understanding of engineering standards and processes
* Ability to turn technical information into easily understood text
* Supervisory experience
* Engineering product lifecycle knowledge
* Technical authoring in an engineering environment
* Writing in a structured environment (e.g. XML to S1000D, Common Source Database, HTML, DITA)
Qualifications
* Degree
* HND or BTEC qualified in engineering science with some engineering experience
* City and Guilds qualified in engineering science with some engineering experience
Security Clearance
This role will require SC Clearance. If you do not currently hold SC Clearance, you must undergo, achieve, and maintain it. Generally, you need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years (or 3 years in certain circumstances). Refer to the UK Security Vetting website for guidance.
