Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust – Consultant Cardiologist with Heart Failure Special Interest

This post is for a consultant in Cardiology. It is a whole‑time opportunity for a highly motivated medical doctor to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care across Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
Applicants must hold membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK or equivalent qualifications), be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and be on the Specialist Register or be due to obtain their CCT within six months of the interview.
ACC will be held on Friday 27th March 2026.
Main duties of the job
The post will primarily be based at Southport District General Hospital with the potential to work across Mersey and West Lancashire hospital sites. There is no on‑call commitment. The appointment is to the Trust, not to a specific hospital, and will involve sessions at both Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals.
All consultants – including the appointee – will be expected to implement the Trust's Clinical Governance programme, including active participation in clinical audit, quality improvement, clinical guidelines and pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management.
The appointee will join a complement of thirty‑three consultants and will participate in providing comprehensive Cardiology Services across both sites, primarily at Southport Hospital.
Allocation of time among the various duties will be open to adjustment after consultation with consultant colleagues and the Employing Trust.

Person specification
Qualifications
* Full GMC registration and on Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
* UK‑trained applicants must also be a holder of CCT, or be within six months of award of CCT by interview date. International doctors must apply for a CESR through the GMC, proving equivalence to UK CCT curriculum.
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* MRCP or equivalent
* MD/PhD or equivalent
Knowledge and Experience
* Evidence of competency achievement in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice: good clinical care, maintaining good medical practice, good relationships with patients, good working relationships with colleagues, teaching and training, professional behaviour and probity, delivery of good acute clinical care
* Demonstrated range, depth and breadth of competencies specified in the cardiology curriculum applicable to this post
* Competence in Heart Failure management
* Competence in Pacing, Nuclear or Cardiology and/or CT angiography
* Cardiology subspecialty interest suitable for DGH development
Teaching Experience
* Evidence of appropriate teaching experience
Research Experience
* Ability to undertake robust audit/research within team structure
* Evidence of relevant academic and research background
