Would you like to be part of something big? To take an organisation with more than 80 years of history and help shape it for the future? To show how powerful communications can drive an ambitious five-year strategy? And above all, to make a real and lasting difference by tackling exclusion and breaking down barriers so people with a learning disability can live life to the full? If so, this might be the role for you.
Mencap is looking for an exceptional Director of Communications and Brand, a strategic, creative, and values-driven leader ready to take our communications to the next level.
This role is a full time (37.5 hours per week), permanent role. We’re offering flexibility as to where this role is based.
In this pivotal role, you’ll:
* Lead Mencap’s organisation-wide communications vision, shaping a bold, influential, and consistent voice.
* Position Mencap as the leading organisation championing people with a learning disability.
* Drive high-impact campaigns that influence public attitudes and policy change.
* Lead teams responsible for media relations, digital channels, social media, brand identity, and strategic communications.
* Champion innovation, accessibility, inclusion, and data-driven decision-making across all communications work.
* Strengthen Mencap’s reputation, increase visibility, and amplify the voices of people with a learning disability.
This is a role where your leadership will directly shape how the world sees and understands people with a learning disability.
What You Will Bring
We’re looking for someone who:
* Has deep experience leading communications and brand functions at a senior level.
* Can confidently drive digital innovation and integrated campaigns.
* Understands reputational risk and how to navigate it.
* Knows how to inspire, develop, and empower teams.
* Lives and breathes inclusion, accessibility, and co-production.
* Understands the learning disability landscape and the wider UK charity sector.
* Uses audience insight and data to make smart, strategic decisions.
Above all, you’ll be a fresh thinker, someone who relishes a challenge, never settles for “meh” and sees communications as a powerful tool for social change.
If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you. Apply now, applications close on 28th February, with interviews to be held shortly afterward.

About Mencap
Our vision is for the UK to be the best place in the world for people with a learning disability to live happy and healthy lives.
We're here to support people with a learning disability, their families and their carers. We fight for a kinder, fairer and more inclusive society for people with a learning disability to live in.
At Mencap, everyone works with people with a learning disability either providing support or advice, or alongside one another as colleagues.
Belonging at Mencap is for everyone, every day, everywhere.
Everyone is expected to treat people well and make Mencap an inclusive organisation. We grow and learn every day; it’s okay to make mistakes but we learn from them and make changes. People will feel respected, valued, and safe to be themselves.
We have Belonging network groups that meet online and are open to all colleagues. The groups include people who identify as Black and Asian, LGBTQIA+, disabled or with a long-term health condition, women, parents and carers, and their allies.
We want to encourage everyone to apply to work at Mencap and we offer a variety of different contract types and working patterns. We’re not looking for specific experience. It is your personality and values that will make you a great colleague. We will train and develop you to succeed in the role you’re applying for.
