Job summary

County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for the position of Theatre Practitioner for Anaesthetics and Recovery at Bishop Auckland General Hospital.

Main duties of the job

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Participate in monitoring standards of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.
* Participate in direct care needs of patients, providing expert knowledge of all clinical specialties and acting as a role model.
* Participate in audit and monitoring, ensuring accurate documentation in accordance with Trust policy, NMC, and HPC guidelines.
* Be competent in facilitating an emergency service covering all specialties within the department, during elective and non-elective periods.
* Ensure the safe administration of drugs in accordance with Trust Policy, NMC, and HPC guidelines.
* Ensure procedures and techniques are carried out in accordance with local competencies and policies.
* Protect patient rights, dignity, and confidentiality at all times.
* Act as a patient advocate in all matters related to care, treatment, and welfare.
* Check departmental cleanliness and assist in preparation, clearing, and cleaning of the operating suite and equipment before, during, and after procedures.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites — Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We also have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield, and Weardale, as well as over 80 other community-based settings and patient homes.

From April 9th, 2025 — Healthcare assistants: You must have at least two years of NHS experience as a HCA for the Trust to consider sponsorship (we will only consider sponsorship if you meet this criterion and have a current visa expiring within 3 months).


Job responsibilities

* Provide patient care within the perioperative environment as a skilled member of the multidisciplinary team.
* Assess care needs, develop care programs, and evaluate these, carrying out all relevant forms of peri-operative patient care without direct supervision over 24 hours, caring for both adult and pediatric patients undergoing routine and emergency surgery.
* The role involves a regular commitment to rotational night duty and out-of-hours work, although this is not required for individuals on a training program.

* Deliver perioperative care across various specialties within the Trust, in line with local and national policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Person Specification


Experience

* Existing experience as a scrub practitioner.


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse / Operating Department Practitioner with scrub experience.
* Experience as a Registered Nurse / ODP within the Operating Theatre; teaching and assessing qualifications or willingness to work towards them; diploma, degree, or relevant practical experience within the department specialties.


Statutory Registration

* Registered with NMC or HCPC.


Skills & Knowledge

* Excellent interpersonal skills.
* Computer skills relevant to the area of practice.
* Recruitment and selection skills.
