Grounds Maintenance section seasonal requirements
Main Purpose of Post/Job Summary
The post holder will be required to work in all weather conditions and as a team member contributing to the maintenance of the Council’s parks, gardens, and open spaces.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Undertake work in public parks, playing fields, landscaped areas, and similar open spaces, including grass cutting, hedge trimming, sweeping, hoeing, raking, edging, litter removal, constructional labouring, erection and dismantling of sports equipment, and cleaning facilities such as changing rooms and toilets.
* Patrol and monitor activities, collect and issue fees and tickets, and maintain public order to ensure compliance with Council bylaws.
* Perform horticultural operations such as planting, pruning, seeding, turfing, and grounds maintenance activities like marking sports areas, spiking, scarifying, top dressing, fertilising, and maintaining tennis courts.
* Assist senior gardeners with planning seasonal works, propagation, nursery care, site preparation, and construction tasks.
* Carry out driving duties as instructed, including vehicle checks, routine maintenance, transportation of goods and personnel, and use of telecommunications equipment, in accordance with Road Traffic legislation.
* Operate and control grounds machinery and hand tools safely, ensuring machinery is not damaged or lost.
* Attend court sessions as required to represent the Council.
* Assist in ordering and maintaining stock and equipment under the supervision of the Team Leader and Line Manager.
* Prepare parks for opening and closing, including being a key holder, and advise the Leisure Department on facility availability.
* Liaise with the public and handle enquiries professionally, following Council policies.
* If possessing a current PA1-PA6 spraying qualification, carry out spraying operations and maintain records in compliance with COSHH Regulations.
Education / Qualifications
⦁ NVQ Level 1 in Horticulture and at least 12 months of relevant experience using commercial grounds maintenance machinery such as strimmers, mowers, leaf blowers, hedge cutters, and hand tools.
OR
⦁ A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience with the same machinery, in lieu of formal qualification.
⦁ Current Category B driving licence.
Experience
* Experience operating grounds maintenance equipment in public or traffic areas.
* Experience maintaining operational records, such as equipment defects.
