School Business Manager

Salary: Surrey Pay Scale Grade 8, from £36,873 to £39,820 p.a. (Full Time Equivalent), £22,179 to £23,952 pro rata)

Hours: 24 hours per week, 40 weeks per year (Term time plus 2 weeks)

Reporting to: Headteacher

We are seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and highly organised School Business Manager to join our dedicated team and play a central role in the strategic and operational life of our school.

St Peter's is a small and friendly one form entry infant school set in the rural village of Tandridge, near Oxted, Surrey. This is a varied and rewarding role, ideal for someone who enjoys working within a supportive school community and who can combine strategic thinking with effective day-to-day management.

Working alongside the Headteacher and Governors, the successful candidate will lead and manage the school’s financial, administrative, personnel and premises functions, ensuring the school operates efficiently and effectively in support of high-quality teaching and learning.

Experience within a school setting is desirable, although applications from candidates with relevant business or management experience from other sectors are also welcomed.


Key Responsibilities of the Role:

Financial Management

•Provide strategic financial advice and regular reporting to the Headteacher, Governors and Finance Committee

•Lead budget planning, monitoring and forecasting to ensure effective use of resources and value for money

•Maintain secure financial systems and internal controls in line with Surrey County Council regulations and audit requirements

•Monitor income and expenditure, prepare financial returns and oversee end-of-year processes

•Support funding applications and additional income generation opportunities where appropriate


Personnel and Administration

•Lead and support the school’s administrative function, promoting high standards of professionalism and efficiency

•Manage HR administration, recruitment processes, contracts, payroll returns and personnel records

•Maintain the Single Central Record and ensure compliance with safeguarding and employment requirements

•Line manage administration staff and the caretaker, including appraisals and support for professional development

•Ensure key school records, policies, safeguarding and fire registers are maintained and up to date

•Oversee the school website and statutory information requirements


Facilities and Operations

•Oversee premises management, maintenance and health and safety procedures across the school site

•Coordinate contractors, service agreements and building projects

•Manage lettings and support the effective use and security of the school premises

•Review and update risk assessments and ensure compliance with relevant regulations


We Are Looking For Someone Who:

•Has strong financial and budget management skills

•Has experience of HR, administration and operational management

•Demonstrates excellent organisational and communication skills

•Is confident using ICT systems, including spreadsheets and school management software such as SIMS

•Can work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities

•Is proactive, flexible and solution-focused

•Builds positive relationships with staff, governors, parents and children

•Understands the importance of confidentiality and professionalism

•Is committed to supporting the Christian ethos and values of the school

•Enjoys being part of a supportive and collaborative team
