We also have a friendly family dog, who absolutely loves meeting new people—she’ll always want to come and say hello! I have my own cosy downstairs bedroom and a specially adapted shower to support my needs. Our home is warm, welcoming and always full of life. I have transport that takes me to and from school every weekday. I was adopted at 13 months old. As I grew, my adoptive parents noticed that I often fell over, had limited eye contact, and experienced difficulties with speech, language, listening and attention. In March 2020, genetic testing showed that I have a genetic variant involving STX1B and GABR2. I have epilepsy associated with STX1B, which is also linked to learning difficulties and movement disorders. I was diagnosed with epileptic encephalopathy and experience several different types of seizures, including multiple seizures during the night. My behaviour is usually at its best when I have one-to-one interaction. I frequently become upset or dysregulated and can display challenging behaviour, often without any clear triggers. I prefer to follow my own agenda and find it very difficult to negotiate or reason with others. I like watching the same programmes repeatedly and can be very particular at home. For example, I always use my unicorn platter for meals, and my food must be placed in the correct sections. I also need the red stars on my nightlight and the same bedtime music every night. My favourite toy changes from time to time, and when I have one, I will play with it repeatedly for weeks. I become very upset if I can’t find a toy and will ask for it. I receive support from a number of services, including Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, my Consultant Paediatric Neurologist, an Epilepsy Consultant, and Social Care. Social Care provides 15 hours of after-school support Monday to Friday, as well as respite care with Ruth and at Acorns. What I Love I’m a happy and curious child who loves spending time in my garden, visiting animals, and playing with other children. I’m learning how to build friendships both at school and at home, and I really enjoy being around people who like helping me grow and explore. My carers are very important to me, and being able to go to school and spend time with my friends means a lot. I especially love animals, and my dog Bella is one of my favourites. Sometimes I can play a little too roughly with Bella, so it’s important that I’m always supervised to keep her safe. Inside my house, I have lots of toys and sensory items to explore! Some of my favourites are: My First Aid doctor’s set Dolls My play kitchen Anything sensory — sand, playdoh, bubbles, foam Sweeping the leaves in the back garden I always know exactly what I want to play with, and I love it when someone joins in with me. I often pick a “favourite toy of the day” and play with it again and again — and I’ll definitely let you know if I can’t find it!
