Qualifications
Qualifications and Occupational Experience:
* A diploma, advanced diploma, or degree in a related field or discipline specific to the specific to the nature of the research such as GIS, Remote Sensing, Geospatial Data Analytics, Marine Geomatics or equivalent
* You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, E-mail,l and Esri products
* You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology in advancing your work
* Experience working outdoors considered an asset
* Ages 15-30 at the start of the internship
* Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee status
* Eligible to work in Canada

Responsibilities
What you will be doing…
The coastal research team at the Applied Geomatics Research Group, part of the Nova Scotia Community College's Applied Research unit, conducts field studies to validate and calibrate their various remote sensing instruments and datasets as well as collect data to support and validate hydrodynamic models of the coastal zone. This job will give experience to an intern who will learn about the collection of environmental data in the coastal zone, the validation of these data, geomatics data processing and model construction. All of these skills are geared towards being able to better manage our coastal zone and ensure a safe and clean coastal environment and to map and assess natural resources like seaweed in this environment. We are also conducting lidar research in the forest to calculate Enhanced Forest Inventory (EFI) based on ground plots and airborne lidar. This EFI will denote both biomass of the forest and the potential carbon storage, both useful commodities for forest land managers. During this fieldwork, several scientific and survey instruments are used to conduct field research along remote sections of the coast and inland forested areas. We have recently conducted aerial surveyed utilizing a topo-bathymetric lidar sensor that surveys the topography of the near-shore seabed and drone-based surveys over forested lands. These data can be processed and maps constructed that are then interpreted. However, follow up ground truth surveys are required to determine the seabed conditions and forest plots in order to confirm and validate the interpretation of these data. To accomplish this, AGRG will supervise the intern in the field and expose them to a variety of field instruments to collect validation data. The ground truth data will be used to assess machine learning models to map both the benthic coastal environment and the forest inventory. We would like to hire a Natural Resource intern from the Geomatics programs at NSCC to work with our group to assist us with sampling in the coastal marine and forest environment using a variety of equipment. In addition to collecting ground truthing data, the intern will also be involved in collecting data during aerial lidar drone surveys
