Overview
Senior Electrical Engineer role within the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team. Join the Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate to influence how we deliver our service. As part of our Technical Authority, provide technical engineering leadership and support to meet our objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and our commitments to net zero carbon. You will manage, develop and maintain our electrical engineering standards, including our electrical safety rules, for electrical systems and equipment, including HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management, flood defence structures and monitoring sites. You will help develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on our electrical systems and equipment. You may be required to hold a national incident response role which may be within normal working hours or out of hours.
The team:
You will join the MEICA Engineering Standards team in Standards and Engineering, part of the Standards, Asset Management and Engineering department, within the Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. The team provides technical standards, management, and leadership across a range of mechanical, electrical and control system activities. The team is dispersed but collaborates regularly within the team and across the business.
Responsibilities
* Manage, develop and maintain electrical engineering standards and electrical safety rules for HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures.
* Develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for employees managing or carrying out work on electrical systems and equipment.
* Provide technical leadership as part of the Technical Authority to support the organisation in achieving safe, reliable and sustainable assets and net zero commitments.
* Support a national incident response role which may occur during or outside normal working hours.
* Collaborate with the MEICA Engineering Standards team to deliver technical standards across mechanical, electrical and control system activities.
Experience / Skills Required
* A good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* A good working knowledge of control systems, including the application of IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and BS EN 13489, and telemetry / SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Experience in the development and delivery of Safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements.
* Testing and isolation of high and low voltage electrical systems and proving dead.
* Strong understanding of a risk-based approach to electrical maintenance philosophies and implementation, including Failure Mode Effects Analysis, reliability systems and processes.
* Drafting and publishing of electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work management, teamwork and communication skills.
Additional Information
* This is a hybrid role with a base location near your home.
* Travel and occasional overnight stays may be required; smart tools are used to stay connected and reduce travel.
* You will have an incident management objective in your development plan; appropriate training will be provided.

Qualifications & Membership
* UK Driving licence (role specific).
* Must have current membership of a recognised engineering institution and be registered as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or evidence of working toward registration with a realistic prospect of registration within 12 months.
