The successful candidate will be a highly skilled and experienced fully qualified Teacher of Deaf Children and Young People, a skilled communicator with minimum Level 6 BSL qualification and who is committed to delivering the very best experiences for our deaf children and young people. Responsibilities The Role of the Teacher of the Deaf 1. Specialist assessments and interpretation of results Interpretation of audiological information and explaining this to those involved with the deaf learner Assessing and monitoring functional hearing levels Monitoring the acoustic environment in the school environment and advising on ways to improve it for the deaf learner Assessing the full range of communication and language levels: including use of sign and spoken language and any modes of communication Ensuring appropriate access arrangements for assessment’s and providing specialist support where necessary Assessing and monitoring educational and other areas of development Contribution to monitoring and review of progress Fitting and monitoring assistive listening devices 2. Provision of advice Discussing the implications of hearing loss and promoting Deaf Awareness strategies with the deaf learner, parents and families, teachers, all involved agencies especially in the context of education Sharing information about communication modes and facilitating informed choice Discussion of amplification needs and technological aids Intervention and implementing strategies to meet identified needs Sharing information about other support available Providing information about educational provision; early years/schools/colleges and other educational setting 3. Direct teaching through an enriched language input through: small group teaching team teaching within mainstream setting 1:1 with the deaf learner generic support Additional Support Plan pre-teaching post-teaching 4. Partnership working A Teacher of Deaf Children and Young People plays an important part in the production of joint assessments, target setting and programmes of work and visits to enable the effective support of the whole family. This will involve cooperation and joint working with a range of professionals, including: Schools and other educational settings British Sign Language Interpreters Clinical Audiologist Consultant Paediatrician Social Work Speech and Language Therapist Children and Adolescents Mental Health Services Educational Psychologist Deaf Agencies (NDCS, BDA and Deaf Action) A range of educational support services. 5. Working with learners and families: sharing progress and identifying next steps with learners and their families open channels of appropriate communication with families informing families of the educational provisions within the local authority for deaf learners providing clear impartial information enabling the learner and family to express their view facilitating family and learner access to professional and extended services providing relevant and appropriate support 6. Continuing Professional Development: keeping abreast of mainstream and within Deaf Education to inform practice continual improvement of British Sign Language skills keeping up-to-date with audiological developments and technological developments using assessments and interpreting outcomes keeping abreast of Scottish Government and South Lanarkshire’s Authority strategies in education In addition, class teachers have the duties and responsibilities to carry out other such tasks and responsibilities as documented within GTCS ‘Professional Standards’.
