Our mission is to build a fairer, more sustainable world, using evidence, action and influence in partnership with others. We work with an unparalleled global network to reshape policies, funding mechanisms and governance at all levels. For more than 50 years, IIED has acted alongside marginalised communities across Africa, Asia and Latin America to bring lived experience, expertise and evidence from those regions to global attention. Our people are central to this purpose, and we currently have almost 200 people across more than 16 countries, with office bases in London and Edinburgh.

We are now looking for a Finance Officer to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis (35 hours per week). This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced finance professional to manage the end-to-end accounts payable process for a globally recognised not-for-profit, helping to ensure our operations are efficient, compliant, and robust.

The Role

As a Finance Officer, you will take ownership of the end-to-end accounts payable process, support our finance Operations and drive efficiency.

Specifically, you will ensure that all supplier invoices, sub-grant reimbursements, and payments are processed accurately and efficiently. You will be involved in all stages of the process from reviewing and validating invoices to managing payment runs across BACS, CHAPS, and international transactions.

You will also seek to resolve supplier queries, whilst maintaining up-to-date vendor records, reconciling accounts payable, and supporting month-end and year-end financial reporting.

You will also ensure VAT compliance by applying correct VAT treatment and supporting the preparation of quarterly returns in line with HMRC regulations.

Other Key Responsibilities:

- Verify supplier details and implement robust fraud prevention controls
- Contribute to improving AP workflows and system enhancements
- Maintain accurate financial documentation and support audit readiness
- Deliver training and support to colleagues on payment processes and best practices

About You

To be considered as a Finance Officer, you will need:

- An AAT qualification or equivalent experience in accounts payable or a related financial role
- Experience in accounts payable, financial administration, or transactional finance within a non-profit, NGO, or international organisation
- Experience processing high volumes of supplier invoices
- Experience in supplier relationship management
- Experience using financial systems, accounting software, and digital tools for transaction processing and financial reporting
- An understanding of accounts payable processes
- Knowledge of VAT regulations
- Familiarity with multi-currency accounting, international payments
- Up to date knowledge of relevant accounting standards and requirements specific to the charity sector

This is a rewarding opportunity for an AAT qualified finance professional with strong accounts payable experience to join our globally respected, purpose-driven organisation.

You’ll play a vital role behind the scenes, enabling our teams to take meaningful action in tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, and global inequality and playing your part in delivering these vital activities.

What’s more, you’ll gain exposure to international financial operations, enjoy flexible hybrid working and contribute to a mission that prioritises equity, fairness, and positive environmental and social impact.

The Benefits

- Salary of £31,960 – £38,675 per annum
- 25 days' annual leave per year (increasing with service) plus bank holidays and additional leave over Christmas
- 7.5% employer pension contributions
- Flexible hybrid working options
- Enhanced maternity, paternity, and adoption pay
- Interest-free season ticket loan (subject to eligibility)
- Cycle-to-work scheme
- Employee protection scheme (life, critical illness, income protection)
