Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic, driven individual to join our amazing team for the part-time (13.00 hours per week) position for the role of the Blood Safety Co-ordinator in Blood Transfusion.

Previous experience or knowledge of blood transfusion would be desirable but is not essential as full training will be given.

he post is working within a busy, modern and well equipped blood transfusion department within the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We provide specialist services in Cancer, Trauma, Maternity and Neonatal Medicine, in addition to the routine transfusion services. We are a one of 3 trauma centres in the region and classed as a high user of blood.

Our aim is to find a conscientious and well-organised individual to perform blood transfusion traceability duties, and assist the Transfusion Practitioner Team. You would therefore bring attention to detail a willingness to learn, good communication skills and an ability to prioritise.

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to work in the Blood Transfusion department and assist the Blood Transfusion Practitioner team at Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley District Hospital. Youwill be expected to assist the Transfusion Practitioner team to help maintain 100% blood product traceability in line with Medicines Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

You will assist in incident reporting and investigation for the transfusion team, liaise with external service users such as private hospitals and hospices, alongside general clerical duties. You will be pivotal in the smooth running of the Transfusion Practitioner team and must be an ambassador for safe transfusion at the Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties to include but not limited to:

1. To assist in maintaining the traceability of blood products
2. Blood transfusion sample error administration and management
3. Access of patient records to obtain relevant traceability information
4. To assist in the administration and running of Blood Track and remote issue kiosks
5. Review cold chain compliance
6. Assist clinical users in using the Blood Transfusion systems
7. General clerical duties and support for the Transfusion Practitioner team including meeting minutes
8. Writing and submitting of Datix reports
9. Network within laboratory and clinical areas promoting safe transfusion practice.

Qualifications and Education

Essential criteria

10. Educated to GCSE standard with at least 2 passes at grade C or above

11. NVQ2 Clinical Support
