Job Title: Health and Safety Advisor
Department: VCO
Reports To: Head of Health and Safety
Job Purpose: As a Health and Safety Advisor, you will be responsible for providing expert guidance and support to managers and staff on all facets of health and safety. Your role involves simplifying complex matters, advising on best practices, and ensuring compliance with legislation. You will collaborate with various stakeholders to develop and implement effective health and safety strategies that align with the University's objectives.
Main Activities and Responsibilities:
1. Offer competent advice on health, safety, and welfare to all levels of management and staff.
2. Contribute to the development of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legislation and streamline processes.
3. Participate in projects such as policy development, fire safety initiatives, and wellbeing campaigns.
4. Attend and provide guidance at departmental and Faculty meetings, supporting Health and Safety Coordinators.
5. Collaborate with HR to monitor sickness absence and identify work-related causes.
6. Manage the health and safety clinic program and incident management system.
7. Assist in risk management processes and conduct fire risk assessments.
8. Support managers in identifying and implementing control measures for risks.
9. Conduct workplace audits and assist in implementing corrective actions.
10. Ensure timely reporting of incidents to relevant external bodies.
11. Stay updated on legislative changes and best practices in risk management.

12. Proficient in managing resources and estimating costs.
13. Excellent communication skills to convey complex information effectively.
14. Ability to work collaboratively across departments and teams.
15. Sound judgement in problem-solving and decision-making.
16. Knowledgeable about health and safety legislation and standards.
Person Specification:
17. Relevant professional qualification (e.g., NEBOSH Diploma) and membership in IOSH.
18. Continuous professional development in the field.
19. Comprehensive understanding of health and safety legislation and standards.
20. Experience in emergency planning, business continuity, and ISO 45001.
21. Strong auditing and report writing skills.
22. Proficiency in IT applications to enhance efficiency.
23. Ability to focus on solutions and manage competing demands effectively.
Special Requirements:
24. Flexibility to work across University premises.
25. Willingness to travel occasionally for conferences and events.
26. Availability to work outside normal office hours as required.
