Clinical Trials Assistant

UCLH, one of London's key cancer centres, is seeking to recruit a Clinical Trials Assistant on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract to support a growing number of cancer clinical trials within the Cellular Therapy Team. The successful candidate will be based within the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit (CCTU) located at 250 Euston Road.
The main role is to support the CCTU team in the administration and running of in‑house, national and international phase I, II and III clinical trials. Responsibilities include contacting patients by phone, assisting clinical trial practitioners and research nurses with appointment booking, creating and maintaining trial files, handling correspondence, and processing or handling blood and tumour tissue samples.
You will be part of a supportive and dynamic team, working closely with clinical research staff. The role is vital in supporting clinical research staff to deliver excellent care to patients with cancer. Full training will be provided, but the successful candidate will be expected to manage their own workload to achieve the goals set by the team.
Ideally we want someone with an interest in clinical research and cancer, good verbal and written communication skills, and knowledge of Microsoft products such as Excel. This role would be ideal for a new science graduate looking to gain first experience working in a health‑care setting.
Main duties of the job
* Sending, collecting and storing questionnaires
* Handling incoming mail and correspondence
* Providing a high‑quality personal assistant service to the team when needed
* Attending clinics if/when requested by the Nurse/Coordinator
* Retrieval/creation and maintenance of patient notes
* Site file maintenance
* Requesting and sending biological samples
* Supporting data managers with relevant queries
* Maintaining up to date and accurate filing systems – paper and IT
* Assisting with surveys/audits as required
* Having a high degree of interpersonal and communication skills to liaise with a wide range of personnel in the multidisciplinary team orally, in writing or electronically in a professional and courteous manner
* To be familiar with and confident in using the Trust IT system
* Taking minutes at departmental and tumour group meetings
* Completing mandatory training and other recommended training
* Prioritising workload, meeting deadlines and tackling problems systematically and with initiative
* Maintaining confidentiality of patient‑related information at all times
* Taking personal responsibility for ensuring that UCLH resources are used efficiently and with minimum wastage
* Adhering to all Trust policies and procedures, the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Data Protection Act
* Monitoring and maintaining physical resources within the work area, and reporting any related problems to line management

Cancer Services sits within the Surgery and Cancer Board. It incorporates comprehensive outpatient, day care, ambulatory care, and inpatient services for Oncology and Haematology.
The Cancer Clinical Trials Unit office is based in 250 Euston Rd and comprises three main areas: Haematology, Oncology and Complex Pathways and it supports activity in the local Clinical Research Facility and the North Thames Local Comprehensive Research Network and Experimental Cancer Centre. Each group is comprised of teams of research nurses, clinical trial practitioners and data managers and provides support to local Investigators wishing to conduct clinical trials and other high‑quality clinical research projects within UCLH. Each team supports a portfolio of research and ensures that trials are conducted to the highest standards and in accordance with UK legislation and the R&D Governance Framework. The aim of the Unit is to effectively use resources to ensure that patients have access to entry into clinical trials, as appropriate, and maintain the highest quality of care for patients.
