Responsibilities
* Dispense in‑patient, out‑patient, discharge prescriptions and aseptically prepared items in line with departmental SOPs, ensuring accuracy, quality and timeliness. Work under the supervision of pharmacy technicians or pharmacists and seek advice on complex prescriptions.
* Dispense controlled drugs in accordance with the Misuse of Drugs Act (1970), RPSGB standards and departmental SOPs. Document receipt of all controlled drugs in paper and electronic registers promptly and maintain register accuracy, reporting discrepancies to the Dispensary Co‑ordinator.
* Receive department requests (including prescription collections, ward requests) and provide staff with timely information on drug dispatch and expected waiting times. Answer basic queries and refer technical or clinical questions to the appropriate professional.
* Maintain cleanliness of all work areas, adhering to cleaning SOPs, ensuring stock is rotated and in date, and removing excess stock from wards following the returns SOP.
* Assist with clerical duties such as filing and photocopying.
* Work flexibly across all pharmacy departments, covering colleagues during peak periods or absences.
* Participate in training, development, appraisals and personal reviews, working towards agreed objectives.
* Provide weekend, late‑night and bank‑holiday coverage as required.
* Undertake any other duties as directed by the Director of Pharmacy in accordance with the grade and nature of the post.
Additional Responsibilities – Rotational Pharmacy Assistant
* Rotate through the Aseptic Suite, Dispensary, Ward services and Stores, gaining experience and undertaking additional training where required.
* Communicate effectively with Pharmacy Technicians, Assistants, Pharmacists, Nurses and Clerical staff, building good working relationships with other departments.
* Demonstrate organisational skills, flexibility and the ability to work well under pressure and in a changing environment.
Qualifications and Attributes
* Qualified QCF (formerly NVQ) Level 2 Pharmacy Assistant.
* Good communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
* Self‑motivated, flexible, able to work well in a changing and transitional environment.
* Proficient computer skills.
* Physically fit and able to perform the physical demands of the role.
* Willingness to learn, take responsibility and work well within a diverse team.
