Assistant Accountant Grants

Location: Penallta House / Hybrid (Agile Working Policy)

Directorate: Education and Corporate Services

Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent

Help shape the future of local services through effective financial support and grant management.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is seeking a motivated and detail-focused finance professional to join our Financial Services Division as an Assistant Accountant Grants. In this important role, youll contribute directly to the success of major service areas by supporting the financial planning, monitoring and reporting of key externally funded projects.

You will work closely with our Senior Accountant and Finance Manager to deliver expert financial support to managers across the Corporate Services and Economy & Environment Directorates. This includes the preparation of grant submissions, budget estimates, and regular financial reports, as well as monitoring expenditure and ensuring compliance with grant terms and conditions.

What Youll Be Doing

Assisting in the financial management and reporting of specific grant programmes.

Producing budget monitoring reports and financial submissions to senior officers and project boards.

Preparing year-end accounts and supporting grant claim submissions and reconciliations.

Advising service managers on budget setting and financial coding structures.

Ensuring holding accounts are maintained and cleared accurately and on time.

Liaising with external organisations, including grant funding bodies and auditors.

Attending and contributing to internal meetings, training sessions, and committee reporting processes.

Supervising junior finance staff involved in grant-related activities.

What Were Looking For

We are looking for a committed and flexible team player with excellent numerical and communication skills. Youll be someone who thrives in a dynamic environment, is confident working independently, and can adapt to meet shifting demands and tight deadlines.

Essential Criteria

Level 4 financial qualification (e.g. AAT Level 4 or equivalent).

Strong understanding of financial and accounting procedures, preferably within a local authority setting.

Experience with budget monitoring, year-end accounts preparation, and financial claims.

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other standard financial systems (e.g. OLAS, iTrent, Proactis).

Excellent analytical and organisational skills.

Ability to prioritise workloads and support financial decision-making.

Desirable

Experience with grant-funded projects or public sector finance.

Knowledge of local government financial regulations.

Some supervisory or team-leading experience.
