Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior ANNP with advanced neonatal clinical practice skills to join our Neonatal Services team. This role involves working at a middle grade level, equivalent to ST3 to ST8 Registrar, providing senior medical cover for 5 of 7 days per week, including 1 weekend every three weeks initially and later Tier 2 medical rota coverage once split. The successful candidate will deliver holistic care across the Neonatal Unit, Delivery Suite, Postnatal Ward, and Meadow Birth Centre, ensuring continuity through patient and family communication, discharge planning, and leadership of junior doctors and ANNPs.


Key Responsibilities

* Provide urgent and non-urgent senior medical review, high-risk deliveries, and emergency care.
* Lead clinical assessments, differential diagnoses, and management of complex neonatal conditions.
* Perform advanced practical procedures (e.g., intubation, ventilation, lumbar puncture) and interpret investigations; supervise ANNP students; contribute to multidisciplinary team development.
* Engage in quality improvement, research, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
* Maintain NMC registration, revalidation, and non-medical prescribing qualifications.
* Provide continuity of care by sharing information with the rotating neonatal services team; coordinate discharge planning and medical follow up for complex/long-term patients.
* Provide day-to-day clinical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to junior doctors and ANNPs; support supervision and professional development.
* Undertake medical reviews of babies in the Neonatal Unit (NNU), Delivery Suite, Transitional Care Unit, Postnatal ward, and Meadow Birth Centre.
* Work collaboratively with paediatrics, nursing, midwifery, obstetrics, and allied health professionals to deliver high-quality, family-integrated care.
* Practice within neonatal guidelines with advanced clinical judgement; maintain family-centred care and accurate documentation.


Practical Procedures

* Initiation and ongoing management of neonates receiving mechanical ventilation; intubation and airway management.
* Ventilation strategies, extubation, surfactant administration, and management of pneumothorax.
* Prescribing and administration of intravenous fluids and parenteral nutrition; advanced resuscitation per guidelines.
* Vascular access, including arterial/venous lines and umbilical catheterisation; lumbar puncture.
* Urinary catheterisation; cranial ultrasound; ECG/CFM interpretation.
* Clinical examination of the newborn; interpretation of laboratory tests and imaging; planning of care from birth to discharge.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Essential: Registered Nurse, RSCN, RN Child ENB 405; MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice (Neonatal Pathway); recognised mentor/assessor or teaching qualification; independent non-medical prescriber; Accredited New-born Infant Physical Examination; current NLS certification.
* Desirable: NLS Instructor; ARNI qualification; counselling/bereavement training; qualification in leadership/management.

Experience

* Extensive ANNP experience (Tier 1 rota or equivalent); expert knowledge of neonatal pathophysiology, diagnostics, and evidence-based care.
* Advanced clinical decision-making and autonomous practice in complex neonatal cases; proficient in advanced neonatal clinical skills (e.g., intubation, lumbar puncture).
* Experience implementing evidence-based practice and service improvements; active participation in clinical audit, governance, and quality improvement initiatives.
* Experience delivering and assessing Neonatal Life Support teaching, mentorship, and supervision of colleagues and trainees; non-medical prescribing experience.


Working Arrangements and Location

This is a permanent, full-time position under Agenda for Change Band 8b. Working pattern is full-time with flexible working. Location: Worcestershire Royal Hospital / Neonatal Services, Paediatric Directorate, Worcester, WR5 1DD. Date posted: 15 September 2025.
