Based within our Learning Support team, you will be responsible for the screening, assessment and access arrangements for learners. You will plan, develop, manage, and monitor the overall process of screening, referrals to educational psychologists, Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) applications and Needs Assessments. You will produce reports of assessments to support students’ application for special arrangements in examinations, and liaise extensively with schools, parents and the College’s Exams department. You would also teach learners with specific learning difficulties.

You should be qualified to degree level with a minimum Level 5 teaching qualification recognised by the FE sector, and possess a relevant specialist dyslexia qualification (e.g. OCR L7 Diploma in SPLD, PG Dip ADDS or MA SPLD) or will be willing to undertake this qualification. You should have experience of teaching and supporting learners with specific learning difficulties and preferably experience of assessing and supporting students with SPLD (Dyslexia). You will need strong administrative and organisational skills, the ability to meet deadlines and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

MAIN PURPOSE

The main purpose of the job is to co ordinate screening, assessment and access arrangements for students with Specific Learning Difficulties.

BACKGROUND

The College has a duty to provide exam access arrangements for those students that qualify. There are key exam dates throughout the year alongside ongoing exams. The post holder will oversee all access arrangements for all students in Uxbridge College and must be committed to inclusive learning and ensure that they demonstrate the very best practice to meet individual learner needs including the promotion of equal opportunities. In addition the post holder may teach up to 6 hours per week. All staff are required to implement college policies.Further Education is an ever-changing service, and all staff are expected to participate constructively in college activities and to adopt a flexible approach to their work.

DUTIES SPECIFIC TO THE POST

Exam Access Arrangement Duties

·To undertake the role of College Exam Access Arrangement Specialist

·To provide advice to students and conduct screenings as necessary, monitoring student progress and maintaining appropriate records.

·To plan, develop, manage, and monitor the overall process of screening, referrals to educational psychologists, Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) applications and Needs Assessments.

·To liaise with the course teams about the needs of students with specific learning difficulties and disabilities to obtain ‘normal ways of working’ information.

·To liaise with schools/parents to gain evidence of exam access arrangements at previous school/college (Form 8s and/or medical evidence).

·To attain (and keep up to date) relevant qualifications which allows the post holder to undertake the role as exam access assessor. Where the post holder is not already qualified to undertake exam access arrangements assessments they will be required to take and pass the relevant qualification within their first year of employment.

·To assist with planning and delivery of staff development to heighten awareness about exams access and more generic specific learning difficulties and other disabilities.

·To maintain strong links with related professional bodies, keeping up to date with the latest developments in the field of exam access arrangements, learning difficulties and disabilities, and maintaining a professional level of expertise in relation to teaching and developments in the field.

·To support the Head of Learning Support in the management of additional support for students.

·To produce reports of assessments to support students’ application for special arrangements in examinations. To inform the exams department of students requiring exam access arrangements in a timely manner to allow for those arrangements to be put in place.

Lecturing Duties

Design and Delivery of Programmes

1. To teach students with Specific Learning Difficulties.

·Prepare schemes of work, lesson plans and resource materials for teaching programmes.

·Utilise IT and learning technology to deliver elements of the curriculum.

·Where appropriate, integrate the delivery of Maths and English

·Prepare assessment plans and schedules and ensure students are aware of your expectations.

·Implement support systems.

·Participate in the evaluation of the effectiveness of teaching and learning.

Qualifications:

·A degree or equivalent level qualification

·A relevant specialist Dyslexia Qualification in the assessment of support of students with SPLD (Dyslexia) eg OCR L7 Diploma in SPLD, PG Dip ADDS, MA SPLD, including a current practising certificate or certificate of competence, or willingness to undertake this qualification

·A full, minimum Level 5 teaching qualification recognised by the Further Education sector (e.g. DET, PGCE)**

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

·Experience of teaching and supporting students with specific learning difficulties

·Experience of assessing and supporting students with SPLD (Dyslexia)

·Excellent organisational and administrative skills and ability to meet deadlines

·Ability to communicate and interact effectively with learners and their parents/carers

·Awareness and understanding of disability and equality legislation Good understanding of Equality and Diversity and Safeguarding in education

·Up-to-date knowledge of the relevant subject area

·Awareness and understanding of pedagogy

·The ability to engage and inspire learners
