Learning Support Assistant (SEN) – Secondary School

Location: Secondary Schools across TeessideRole: Learning Support Assistant Contract: Term-time only | Full-timeSalary: Competitive, dependent on experience

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced SEN Learning Support Assistant to work within a secondary school supporting pupils with significant additional needs. This role is primarily 1:1 and small-group based, supporting students with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), including needs such as Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, SEMH, speech and language difficulties, and moderate learning difficulties (MLD).

The successful candidate will play a vital role in helping students access the curriculum, regulate behaviour, and develop independence both academically and socially.

Key Responsibilities

* Provide 1:1 targeted support for identified SEN pupils across a range of secondary subjects
* Support pupils with ASC, SEMH and behavioural needs, using consistent routines and strategies
* Implement and follow EHCP targets, personalised learning plans and behaviour support plans
* Assist students with emotional regulation, engagement, focus and transitions between lessons
* Work closely with the SENCo, class teachers and pastoral team to monitor progress
* Support pupils during unstructured times (breaks, lunchtimes and transitions) when required
* Use de-escalation strategies and positive behaviour reinforcement effectively
* Encourage independence while maintaining appropriate safeguarding and supervision
* Keep accurate records and provide feedback on progress and behaviour

The Ideal Candidate

* Previous experience supporting SEN pupils in a secondary school setting
* Strong understanding of ASC, SEMH and complex behavioural needs
* Calm, patient and resilient approach to challenging situations
* Able to build positive, trusting relationships with young people
* Confident working 1:1 with pupils who may display dysregulated behaviour
* Good literacy, numeracy and communication skills
* Team-focused with a proactive and flexible attitude

Desirable (But Not Essential)

* SEN-specific training
* Experience working with EHCPs
* Background in youth work, care, psychology or education
