Specialist Pharmacy Technician (Rheumatology and Gastroenterology)

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and highly motivated pharmacy technician to join the rheumatology and gastroenterology departments. In this role, you will work closely with the lead pharmacist to support the safe and efficient switching of biologic treatments to the most cost‑effective options, ensuring excellent value and continuity of care for patients.
Responsibilities include collaborating regularly with key stakeholders—including home‑care providers and colleagues across rheumatology, gastroenterology, and pharmacy—providing proactive problem‑solving and sound decision‑making, and supporting lead pharmacists with the electronic issuing of home‑care prescriptions.
Key duties:
* Support safe and cost‑effective switching of biologic treatments.
* Collaborate with stakeholders across departments.
* Assist with electronic issuance of home‑care prescriptions.
* Maintain high‑quality service and patient safety standards.
Qualifications - Academic and Professional
* NVQ3, BTEC in Pharmaceutical Services or equivalent and further specialised training and/or experience to an equivalent of degree level.
* Knowledge gained through post‑qualification hospital pharmacy experience, and as an accredited checking technician or with direct supervision of staff in pharmacy stores.
* GCSE Grade C or equivalent in English, and Science.
* GCSE Grade A or B in maths (or equivalent).
* Further post‑graduate studies.
* Clinical Qualification in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
* Active membership of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK (APTUK) and other relevant organisations.
Contractual Requirements
* Flexibility in working hours.
* Car owner with current driving licence.

Knowledge Requirements
* Clinical Pharmacy knowledge gained through vocational practice.
* Knowledge of pharmaceutical technical procedures.
* Knowledge of medicines management, including relevant legislation and policies.
* Knowledge and experience of pharmacy home‑care services.
Experience
* Considerable demonstrable experience of hospital pharmacy.
* Excellent IT/Keyboard skills.
* Working knowledge of Excel.
* Good written and verbal communication skills.
* Good organisational/time management/prioritisation skills.
* Experience in dealing with difficult or complex situations.
* Experience of improving quality of pharmacy services provided.
* Training ability.
* Accreditation for checking dispensed prescriptions of others or equivalent supervisory experience.
* Experience of database use.
* Experience of change management against clinical and financial criteria.
* Experience of implementing improvements.
* Experience of presenting reports and papers to committees and panels.
* Writing and disseminating policies and procedures.
* Experience of completing audits.
* Experience of report writing.
